The design and manufacture of past fuel injection systems required extensive modification of the cylinder head in order to provide and actuate hydraulically actuated fuel injectors. Additionally, methods to avoid the cylinder head modifications have presented reliability concerns. The present invention overcomes these problems by providing an adapter assembly releasably connected to the cylinder head. The adapter assembly includes an adapter which has an integrally formed actuating fluid manifold and an integrally formed fuel manifold. The present invention provides a means for communicating between the actuating fluid manifold and the actuating fluid inlet passage of a hydraulically actuated fuel injector and a means for communicating between the fuel manifold and the fuel inlet passage of the fuel injector. Actuating fluid is communicated through the actuating fluid manifold and into the actuating fluid inlet passage in order to actuate the fuel injector. This results in a more reliable system which eliminates costly modifications to the cylinder head.

An arrangement for mounting a two-stroke cycle vertical crankshaft internal combustion engine on a rotary mower deck to accept a four-stroke cycle vertical crankshaft internal combustion engine whereby either type engine may be adapted to the same mower deck is disclosed including a feature for minimizing the risk of crankshaft or crankcase damage in the event of impact of the rotating mower blade with a relatively immovable object. By employing the adapted which allows mounting of the two-stroke cycle engine on the mower deck to also reinforce the lower region of the engine crankcase where the crankshaft extends from the crankcase a lighter weight, cheaper construction of the two-stroke cycle engine is possible.

A multi-cylinder, gasoline burning internal combustion engine is converted by modification of the intake and exhaust manifolds to an engine having designated exhaust burning cylinders which burn the exhaust gases that are expelled from the gasoline burning cylinders. The intake manifold is modified to isolate an even number of cylinders as the designated exhaust burning cylinders. Typically, two cylinders are chosen, although in some instances it is possible to designate four or even six cylinders, the number of designated exhaust burning cylinders not exceeding half the total number of cylinders in the engine. A pair of cylinders selected as exhaust burning cylinders have their pistons in the same relative positions and moving in the same relative directions but have spark ignition occurring at 360.degree. with respect to each other. No modification is required to the ignition system of the engine. Both the designated exhaust burning cylinders and the gasoline burning cylinders exhaust into a common exhaust manifold system. The exhaust manifold system is modified so as to draw off the lighter exhaust gases to supply to the isolated intake manifold for the designated exhaust burning cylinders. Fresh air is added to the isolated intake manifold and to the exhaust manifold to combine with the exhaust gases to make conditions suitable for combustion in the designated exhaust burning cylinders. The vapors of the crankcase and the gasoline supply tank may be connected in series and supplied to the isolated intake manifold to provide an additional fuel source for the designated exhaust burning cylinders.

A system for deactivating half the cylinders of an internal combustion engine to reduce its capacity, as in converting a V-8 engine to a V-4, to reduce fuel consumption and atmospheric pollution and make the engine more economical to operate. The pistons of the deactivated cylinders are replaced by piston substitutes, which are equal in weight to the original pistons and do not affect balance of the engine, the piston substitutes being cut away to allow free air flow and avoid pumping action. Spark plugs in the deactivated cylinders are replaced by dummy conductive plugs, the valve push rods are removed and the tappets replaced by fixed substitutes.

The system includes, a switch determination module that initiates a switch request to switch between at least one of a premixed compression ignition (PCI) mode and a diesel combustion mode based on engine speed and at least one of fuel quantity and torque; a transition module that commands the at least one of the PCI mode and the diesel combustion mode based on the switch request; and a control module that controls at least one of target airflow desired fuel quantity and desired fuel injection timing based on the command.
