THE CONTROL SIGNALS HAVE A DURATION SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW THE TIMING SIGNALS TO EFFECT OPENING OF THE INJECTOR VALVES FOR NEARLY 180 DEGREES OF CRANKSHAFT ROTATION, IN TIMED RELATION TO THE INTAKE STROKES. IN ONE EMBODIMENT, DESIGNED FOR A FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE, A SINGLE TIMING FLIPFLOP IS USED WHILE IN OTHER EMBODIMENTS, DESIGNED FOR EIGHT CYLINDER ENGINES, TWO FLIP-FLOPS ARE USED IN A MANNER TO PERMIT OVERLAP OF THE TIMES OF OPENING OF THE FUEL INJECTION VALVES. ADDITIONAL FEATURES RELATE TO THE APPLICATION OF PRE AND POST BIAS SIGNALS IN COMBINATION WITH A SHORT DURATION VALVE OPENING PULSE IN A MANNER TO PERMIT RAPID AND ACCURATE CONTROL OF THE OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE INJECTOR VALVES.

IN AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE HAVING A PLURALITY OF CYLINDERS ARRANGED IN FIRST AND SECOND BANKS, AN ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM INCLUDES A TIMING APPARATUS FOR SYNCHRONIZING THE INJECTION ORDER OF THE CYLINDERS WITH THE IGNITION ORDER OF THE CYLINDERS. THE TIMING APPARATUS COMPRISES A TIMING TRANSDUCER AND A TIMING CIRCUIT. THE TIMING TRANSDUCER INCLUDES A PAIR OF ROTATABLE PERMANENT MAGNETS OPPOSITELY POLED WITH RESPECT TO A STATIONARY WINDING FOR PRODUCING ALTERNATE FIRST AND SECOND TIMING PULSE PAIRS IN SYNCHRONIZATION WITH THE OPERATING CYCLES OF THE ENGINE. THE FIRST AND SECOND TIMING PULSE PAIRS EXHIBIT OPPOSITE POLARITY TRANSITIONS EFFECTIVELY DIVIDING EACH ENGINE OPERATING CYCLE INTO FIRST AND SECOND OPERATING STAGES. THE TIMING CIRCUIT INCLUDES A BISTABLE MULTIVIBRATOR FOR PRODUCING A TIMING SIGNAL WHICH ALTERNATELY SHIFTS BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND LEVELS IN RESPONSE TO THE OPPOSITE POLARITY TRANSITIONS IN THE FIRST AND SECOND TIMING PULSE PAIRS. IN A CONVENTIONAL MANNER, A FUEL IGNITION SYSTEM SEQUENTIALLY FIRES THE FIRST BANK OF CYLINDERS DURING THE FIRST OPERATING STAGE AND SEQUENTIALLY FIRES THE SECOND BANK OF CYLINDERS DURING THE SECOND OPERATING STAGE. IN A COMPLEMENTARY MANNER, THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM IS RESONSIVE TO THE FIRST AND SECOND LEVELS OF THE TIMING SIGNAL TO SIMULTANEOUSLY CHARGE THE FIRST BANK OF CYLINDERS DURING THE FIRST OPERATING STAGE AND TO SIMULTANEOUSLY CHARGE THE SECOND BANK OF CYLINDERS DURING THE SECOND OPERATING STAGE. THUS, THE INJECTION ORDER OF THE CYLINDERS IS TIME DIVISION SYNCHRONIZED WITH THE IGNITION ORDER OF THE CYLINDERS.

An electronic control unit detects a manner of fluctuation of a fuel pressure with injection of fuel by a fuel injection valve with the use of a fuel pressure sensor, and calculates a tendency of deviation of an actual fuel injection characteristic of the fuel injection valve with respect to a basic fuel injection characteristic on the basis of a result of comparison between a detected temporal waveform and a basic temporal waveform. The tendency of deviation is reflected at a predetermined reflection rate (R) at the time of updating a learned value (Gij) for compensating for an individual difference of the fuel injection valve. The predetermined reflection rate (R) is increased when an accumulated value (D) of a vehicle travel distance is shorter than a predetermined value (Dth) as compared with when the accumulated value (D) is longer than or equal to the predetermined value (Dth).

The electric power is delivered to the power supply network, and the mechanical power delivered by the internal combustion engine is at least temporarily increased depending on the value of at least one operating parameter of the generator and/or the internal combustion engine prior to the network fault and/or during the network fault, preferably by an amount of a fuel introduced into the internal combustion engine being increased.

There is provided an engine control apparatus that makes it possible that, even in the case where an abnormality occurs in a microcomputer and the operations of the injectors in a series of cylinders are interrupted, there is obtained continuous driving without interruption of the engine, when the microcomputer is restored to normal condition. The microcomputer stores in a backup RAM the injection cylinder and the injection fuel amount at a time when a main fuel injection control means sequentially outputs a drive signal to each of the injectors of the cylinders. After the microcomputer 11 is reset due to detection of an abnormality therein and then is restarted, the post-resetting injection cylinder determining means 31 in the microcomputer determines cylinders into which fuel could not be injected during reset period, based on an fuel injection cylinder that has been stored in a backup RAM 11a at a time immediately prior to the resetting, and fuel is immediately and asynchronously injected into the determined cylinders at an injection fuel amount that has been stored in the backup RAM 11a at a time immediately prior to the resetting.

The main throttle body has a main throttle plate disposed therein to control airflow passing to the outlet of the main throttle body. One of the pair of plenums has a plenum throttle plate for controlling air from the one of the pair of output ports of the main throttle body coupled thereto to cylinders in the bank of cylinders coupled thereto. During transitions from an engine operation mode using a first number of the cylinders to a mode using a different number of the cylinders, the plenum throttle plate is operated to provide a change in airflow to said one of the pair of plenums in a first sense thereby changing the airflow in the other one of the bank of cylinders in a second, opposite sense.

A control for an injection system of a multicylinder internal combustion engine has a high pressure pump connected to a distributor element provided with outlet openings from which branch lines lead separately to groups of injection valves. The distributor element has first and second spring biased pistons that are operable to block selectively fuel to the branch lines, each of the pistons having a throttle point situated therein. When a major leak develops downstream from the distributor element, the branch line in which the leak has occurred is automatically shut off by the associated piston in the distributor element, due to the imbalance in pressure which results. When a minor leak develops, one of the branch lines is automatically closed by a control unit shutting off the injection valves associated with the other branch line, while the high pressure pump continues to deliver for at least one operating cycle. The other branch line and associate injection valves operate once again, with an adjustment of the fuel volume supplied when elimination of the leak is detected. When, however, it is determined that the leak still exists, injection valves that have been shut off are activated once again without delivering new fuel, and one branch line and associated injection valves continues to operate while adjusting the amount of fuel delivered.

A combined electronic ignition and fuel injection system for internal combustion engines utilizes a non-magnetic disk, attached to the engines shaft and rotates with the shaft, and contains permanent magnet along the periphery of the disk at intervals defined by the shaft's position for each cylinder group. The magnets develop voltage timing pulses within pick-ups coils which are connected to circuits for amplifying and shaping the timing signals. The coil driver switch charges the ignition coil and the spark plugs are then fired, then in another cylinder chamber the fuel injectors are opened, and the fuel is injected into the cylinder chamber. This electronic ignition and fuel injection system is an improvement and a simpler system than that which is usually utilized in internal combustion engines, because it does not require the use of a computer or distributor. It is particularly useful in the rotary-reciprocal combustion engines, and may be used in rotary and reciprocal combustion engines.
