New aromatic polyesters and polyester-carbonates are prepared by the reaction of bisphenols of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently of each other represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a halogen atom, i and k denote zero or an integer 1 to 4, and X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 represent fluorine by the two-phase boundary process in an aqueous-alkaline phase with iso- or tere-phthaloyl dichloride. The polyesters and polyester carbonates according to the invention can be processed to form shaped articles by extrusion molding or in an extruder, applied in the form of solutions, or spun to fibers from melt or solution.
