A composition capable of emitting circularly polarised light comprises a medium including a chiral, helical liquid crystalline phase with a substantially fixed, temperature independent helical pitch. The liquid crystalline phase is comprised of calamatic liquid crystal molecules having a luminescent moiety and the composition is such that excitation of the luminescent moiety causes the medium to emit light in the bandwidth of selective reflection of the liquid crystalline phase. To achieve the substantially temperature independent helical pitch, the chiral helical liquid crystalline phase may be in the form of a glass or a polymerised network. The composition may be used to produce a light emitting device, e.g. and OLED.

These materials may be used as uncrosslinked liquid crystalline glasses or crosslinked as insoluble polymer matrices. The polymer may be formed by photopolymerization. The polymerization may be done without a photoinitiator. The polymer may have a room temperature nematic phase that may be stabilized the nematic phase relative to smectic phases. The polymer may be easily photocrosslinked with a high final degree of polymerization. The layers of crosslinked layers organic semiconductor may be incorporated into electronic devices. Before an indicium is printed on a mailpiece, a scanner is used to scan recipient address information printed on a mailpiece. Using the scanned information, the metering device determines the Postnet bar code corresponding to the scanned information. A check is then made to determine if the recipient address information has changed from the scanned information. If it has not changed, the metering device prints the postal code on the mailpiece. When the recipient address information has changed, the metering device generates a corrected postal code and prints the corrected postal code and the corrected address on the mailpiece.
