A screen printing unit equipped with a rotary screen apparatus comprises a cylindrical screen rotatably supported so as to be brought into contact with a rotatable impression cylinder. Multiple small holes are formed in the circumferential surface of the screen, and are filled up with a coating material. Some of the holes corresponding to a pattern not being filled with the coating material, and a special ink stored inside the screen can be supplied to a sheet held on the outer circumferential surface of the impression cylinder so as to form a shape corresponding to the pattern. The small holes are formed only in an area of the screen in the circumferential direction thereof extending from a position corresponding to the downstream-side end of the sheet in the sheet-conveying direction to a position corresponding to the upstream-side end of the sheet in the sheet-conveying direction.

An extended length of stencil masking tape (100) is provided with an array of cutouts (120) therein, and has a weak adhesive (116) on a back surface (114) for adhering to a surface (150), whereafter paint or other marking material may be applied to the cutout areas. The masking tape (100) is then removed from the surface (150) and discarded, simultaneously removing excess paint and leaving painted surface portions (154) in the shape of the cutouts. The stencil masking tape (100) may be provided rolled onto a cylindrical body (102) for convenience in handling. A method of using such a stencil masking tape is disclosed, and the stencil masking tape may be used in conjunction with a second such stencil masking tape (100′) that is applicable to the stencil-painted surface to enable additional painting such as with another paint color and where the second masking tape has differently shaped cutouts (120′;220′;320). The stencil masking tape (300) may also include a nonlinear longitudinal edge (332) for painting a continuous or near-continuous border adjacent to the cutouts.

An ink stencil having a cross-linked ink layer that provides resistance to the etching process. An ink stencil is printed on-demand using a thermal ribbon doped with UV photo inhibitors. Upon exposure to certain UV wavelengths a cross-linked structure is formed which is stronger than existing ink layers. The stencil can be used multiple times without degredation and to withstand higher power during an etching process.

In one embodiment, the stencil includes a coating applied to at least one surface of a pattern of the stencil or screen to retard running of the printable material onto the surface. In another embodiment, the stencil or screen includes a second coating applied to at least one other surface of the pattern to promote spreading of the printable material onto the substrate.

A screen-printing apparatus for printing creamy solder paste on a substrate by attaching a screen mask to the substrate. A laser-measuring device mounted in the apparatus measures the top surface of the screen mask at a printing position and the top of the substrate at a substrate-measurement position by three-dimensional measurement, and detects a shape of the substrate or the screen mask, and determines whether or not they are acceptable. After screen printing is completed, the substrate and the screen mask undergo a printing inspection where their shapes are inspected. This provides not only inspection data of the printing results but also data for identifying the causes of print failures. As a result, the screen-printing apparatus, which has high-printing accuracy and can prevent printing failures from occurring, is provided.

A thermal master making device and a thermal printer including the same are disclosed. A thermistor senses ambient temperature around a thermal head. A correcting device corrects the amount of heat to be generated by the thermal head, i.e., the duration of energization at least two times during a single master making operation. This configuration reduces a change in the perforation conditions of a thermosensitive medium ascribable to the heat accumulation characteristic of the head. The printer achieves high resolution, high-speed master making and space saving.

The microporous stencil sheet is for use in stencil printing using a low-viscosity ink with a viscosity ranging from 0.001 to 1 Pa·s, comprises an inelastic resin film and has an air permeability ranging from 1 to 600 seconds and a thickness ranging from 1 to 100 &mgr;m. The methods for making stencil master using this microporous stencil sheet comprise the step of closing the micropores of the stencil sheet in a non-printing portion of a desired printed image.
