An internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle has a cylinder block formed with a cylinder bore, and a piston is fitted in the bore and reciprocates in it. A cylinder head is affixed to the cylinder block and defines a combustion chamber in cooperation with the piston and the cylinder bore. This cylinder head is formed with a portion which in cooperation with a portion of the piston defines a squish area of the combustion chamber, and with a coolant passage which substantially follows through the cylinder head adjacent to the squish area so as directly to cool the squish area. The coolant passage is of substantially the same cross sectional area along its extent. Thereby, the flow of coolant through the coolant passage is kept substantially uniform and at uniform speed throughout its extent, and cooling of the squish area is enhanced. If the squish area bulges inwards towards the central axis of the cylinder bore, then the inner wall of the coolant passage may bulge inwards so as to follow the inward bulging of the squish area; and in this case the outer wall of the coolant passage may likewise bulge inwards so as to follow this inward bulging of the inner wall of the coolant passage. The inlet or the outlet of the coolant passage may be restricted by a bulge defined by a portion of the cylinder head which surrounds a cylinder head bolt receiving hole formed in the cylinder head.

A piston for attenuation of detonation in a combustion chamber in an internal combustion engine has a top wall accommodating a cap. The cap has an upwardly and inwardly inclined first section, a downwardly and inclined second section and a transverse wall at the inner end of the second section. The transverse wall projects upwardly from the top wall of the piston and extends across the piston in the direction of movement of the flame front in the combustion chamber. The first section has a plurality of channels providing paths for the flame front. The second section has an additional channel providing a further path for the flame front. The flame front commences at the ignition point moves over the cap and the transverse wall. The transverse wall provides an abrupt increase in the cross sectional areas of the combustion chamber in the direction of travel of flame front which attenuates detonation in the combustion chamber.

An improved dome-shaped piston head is disclosed characterized by a plurality of channels, depressions, and recesses which enhance the flow of an air-fuel mixture around the piston head in a combustion chamber and the flow of exhaust gases from the chamber. Specifically, the dome-shaped head portion includes a pair of depressions in its intake and exhaust side portions for increasing swirl of the air-fuel mixture. The intake side portion of the piston head also includes first and second channels which cooperate with the intake depression to direct the incoming air-fuel mixture around the piston dome and upwardly into the combustion chamber with swirling turbulence. The exhaust side portion of the piston head includes a pair of tapered recesses on opposite sides of the exhaust depression for directing exhaust gases toward the exhaust opening.

An internal combustion engine using a two stroke cycle includes a pair of opposing cylinder units, each of which are located on opposing sides of a crankcase. In each cylinder unit is a cylinder with a piston disposed in the cylinder. Each piston is coupled to a piston rod that is aligned along an axis that passes through the center of each cylinder bore. The piston rods pass through the crankcase wall into the crankcase chamber, and are further coupled to a yoke. Each cylinder unit has an intake channel from the crankcase chamber to a cylinder intake port in the cylinder. As the piston traverses its upstroke in its cylinder, it creates a vacuum under the piston. At the top of its stroke a piston intake port becomes aligned with the cylinder intake port, allow fuel to be drawn into the cylinder under the piston. As a result, a continuous vacuum is experienced in the crankcase without the need for mechanical valving arrangements.
