A gear transmission and a spherical surface frictional transmission are performed simultaneously in a power-transmission of a continuously variable speed transmission so as to utilize the high efficiency of the gear transmission and the continuously variable capability of the frictional transmission to the maximum. The continuous speed variation is made by a combination of a planetary gear speed reducer with a ratio (contact point radius ratio) dynamic frictional transmission device, a combination of the planetary gear speed reducer, a ratio dynamic frictional transmission device and a differential gear device, and a combination of a ratio dynamic frictional transmission device with a differential gear device. The transmission is suitable for use in those device requiring continuous speed variation such as cars, air conditioners, blowers and exhausters, pumps, industrial machinery and so on. When the transmission is assembled with a squirrel-cage motor in short-circuit operation which is simplest in structure and highest in efficiency among electric motor, its utility value is very large.

To make a continuously variable transmission small and to be able to freely set a transmission ratio of a driving force transmitted from an engine to a continuously variable transmission. A continuously variable transmission for carrying out gear changes by a rotary drive member and a driven rotary member supported so as to be freely rotatable at a main transmission shaft coming into contact with variable speed rotary members supported at gears and so as to be freely rotatable is housed within a transmission chamber partitioned from a crank chamber and enclosing lubricating oil. The driving force of the crank shaft of the engine is inputted to a driven gear provided at the main transmission shaft that passes through a cover member of the transmission chamber and protrudes to the inside of the crank chamber. By providing the driven gear outside of the transmission chamber, a situation where the dimensions of the continuously variable transmission T are made large due to the driven gear can be prevented and the transmission chamber can be made small. Further, the transmission ratio of the drive force transmitted to the continuously variable transmission T can be freely set just by changing the external diameter of the driven gear.

A mechanism for varying rotational speed between two rotary shafts, namely a drive shaft and a driven shaft. The mechanism is designed to replace gear boxes which are generally used in motor vehicles. The mechanism includes two truncated cones with concave surface generatrices attached to a shaft secured to the engine and to a shaft secured to the transmission members, respectively. A roller made up of an inverted double cone having convex surface generatrices is mounted on an arm via a pin and arranged to rotationally interconnect the truncated cones by means of the adherence caused both by the choice of materials and by the bearing force exerted on the truncated cones by the roller through a suitable pressure member. The roller is translationally movable over the convex surfaces of the truncated cones by means of a suitable position varying system for adapting the drive ratio to the various parameters which influence the operation of the whole mechanism, according to its position. The mechanism is particularly suitable for use in motor vehicles.
