Abstract: A transmitter comprising a plurality of modulator and multiplexer (Mod-MUX) units, each Mod-MUX unit operating at an optical wavelength different from the other Mod-MUX units. The transmitter can additional include in each Mod-MUX unit two optical taps and three photodetectors that are configured to allow the respective Mod-MUX unit to be tuned to achieve thermal stabilization and achieve effective modulation and WDM operation across a range of temperatures. The Mod-MUX transmitter avoids the use of a frequency comb. The Mod-MUX transmitter avoids cross-modulation between different modulators for different laser signals.

Abstract: A microwave-frequency source at frequency fM comprises: a dual optical-frequency reference source, an electro-optic sideband generator, an optical bandpass filter, an optical detector, a reference oscillator, an electrical circuit, and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The sideband generator modulates dual optical reference signals at v2 and v1 to generate sideband signals at v1±n1fM and v2±n2fM. The bandpass filter transmits sideband signals at v1+N1fM and v2−N2fM. The optical detector generates a beat note at (v2−N2fM)−(v1+N1fM). The beat note and a reference oscillator signal are processed by the circuit to generate a loop-filtered error signal to input to the VCO. Output of the VCO at fM drives the sideband generator and forms the microwave-frequency output signal. The resultant frequency division results in reduced phase noise on the microwave-frequency signal.

Abstract: A coherent optical transmitter is in operable communication with an optical fiber an includes a plurality of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) configured to (i) receive a plurality of radio frequency analog input signals, respectively, and (ii) convert the received plurality of RF analog input signals into a plurality of respective digital data streams. The transmitter further includes a source laser configured to output at least two orthogonal polarization component signals, and at least two polarization modulators configured to modulate (i) an in-phase portion output from a first ADC, (ii) an in-quadrature portion output from a second ADC, and (iii) one polarization component signal of the at least two orthogonal polarization component signals. The transmitter further includes a polarization beam combiner configured to (i) multiplex the respective outputs of the at least two polarization modulators, and (ii) transmit the multiplexed output from the polarization beam combiner to the optical fiber.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses, including computer program code are disclosed. The apparatus may include at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code. The at least one processor, the at least one memory, and the computer program code may be configured to cause the apparatus to generate a divergent beam for an optical source that is coincident with a divergent beam for an optical detector. The apparatus may determine an adjustment to a mirror to cause an optical alignment of an incoming beam with the optical detector based on at least an optical intensity across the optical detector, wherein the alignment is with respect to at least another apparatus. The apparatus may adjust a position of the mirror according to the determined adjustment, and change the divergent beam to a collimated beam to enable optical communications with the other apparatus via the collimated beam.

Alternatively, a single monitor photodiode is used, receiving self-mix signals from multiple laser transmitters, and outputting a single electric signal to a single laser receiver.
