An end mill resharpening device is provided which will resharpen the primary and secondary cutting edges of both the flutes and the end of the mill. All of the proper side and end angles, as well as an end "fish-tail" angle are produced automatically by the unique features of the device. Additional benefits provided include a novel method of making an air bearing, a floating spindle knob and grinding wheel balancer.

Apparatus for sharpening the face cutting edges of an end mill is comprised of a rotatable abrasive wheel and three platforms adapted to provide accurate positioning in a vertical and two lateral directions. The third platform, which is uppermost and tilted in the direction of the abrasive wheel, supports a rotatable turret having a chuck which holds the end mill. The apparatus permits stepwise contact of the land and chamfer zones of the trailing surface associated with each face cutting edge with the abrasive wheel rotating in a plane perpendicular to said trailing surface. The land and chamfer zones are caused to contact the abrasive wheel at two different sites in a lower quadrant of its circular periphery, thereby producing different inclinations of said zones. Because of the tilt of the third platform, both the land and chamfer zones have the same dish angle of between about 0.degree. and 3.degree..

A method of, and apparatus for, grinding cutting tools attached to a cutter head for gear cutting machines, the cutter head having sets of cutting tools encompassing three respective groups of cutting tools, specifically inner cutters, outer cutters and auxiliary cutters. Two groups of the cutting tools are removed from the cutter head, the first group of cutting tools is completely ground at the cutter head, the second group of cutting tools is inserted into the cutter head and completely ground, and then the third group of cutting tools is inserted in the cutter head and completely ground.

A production type machine is designed to grind end mills at a high rate while maintaining rigid standards of accuracy of dimension. Adjustments are quickly and easily made for different profiles of the ground face, the number of flutes on the mill, the size of the end mill, and so on. The machine will selectively grind either a curved cutter face, or an angular primarysecondary relief form thereon. Operation of the apparatus is fully automatic once the grind cycle is started, after necessary adjustments are made, as only the loading and unloading operations are manually performed.

Apparatus for supporting a tool which must be accurately moved along a predetermined path relative to a cutter, grinding wheel, polishing wheel or the like for forming, grinding, polishing, and/or refluting of the tool wherein improved mechanism is provided for enabling variable proportioning of tool rotation and translation. A simple rack and pinion mechanism is incorporated in the work moving apparatus so that a desired change can be made in the amount of rotation of the tool achieved for each unit of translatory movement of the tool.
