Abstract: A lightweight lift system for VTOL/VSTOL operation running in parallel with an existing turbine. This system distributes LP power by switching compressor flow and fuel proportionally over to the lift turbine module. As forward thrust is demanded, some of the power is transitioned back to the flight LP turbine, which can drive a variable propeller, fan or can supply jet thrust. As flight motion occurs, the power to the lift fan can be reduced to zero and lift closed off.

Abstract: A system is described that includes a controllable component of an engine configured to regulate fuel flow to the engine, a digital control unit configured to control the engine by at least communicating with the controllable component of the engine, and a protection component configured to disable communication between the digital control unit and the controllable component of the engine. The system further includes an analog control unit configured to control the engine by at least communicating with the controllable component of the engine in response to the protection component disabling communication between the digital control unit and the controllable component of the engine.

Abstract: An electrophoretic deposition method of forming a boron nitride (BN) nanotube interface coating on ceramic fibers has been developed. The method comprises immersing first and second electrodes in a suspension including surface-modified BN nanotubes, where the first electrode includes ceramic fibers positioned on a surface thereof. The surface-modified BN nanotubes comprise BN nanotubes with an electrically charged polymer adsorbed on surfaces thereof. A voltage is applied to the first and second electrodes, and the surface-modified BN nanotubes move toward the first electrode and deposit on the ceramic fibers. After the deposition of the surface-modified BN nanotubes, the ceramic fibers are removed from the suspension and heat treated. Accordingly, a BN nanotube interface coating is formed on the ceramic fibers.

Abstract: An abradable sealing element comprises a substrate and a sealing structure. The sealing structure comprises one or more wall structures extending from the substrate and defining at least one open cell which is filled with abradable material. The one or more wall structures are formed by additive-layer, powder-fed, laser-weld deposition onto the substrate. The one or more wall structures are formed from nickel-based superalloy and constitute from about 10% to about 50% of the total volume of the sealing structure.

Abstract: A method for selectively adhering braze powders to a surface comprises applying a binder material to a surface, depositing a braze powder on the binder material, and then directing a laser beam onto the braze powder while the laser beam moves along a predetermined path relative to the surface. The laser beam selectively heats the braze powder and the binder material along the predetermined path such that the binder material is removed and the braze powder is sintered and bonded to the surface. Thus, a braze deposit is formed at one or more predetermined locations on the surface. After forming the braze deposit, excess braze powder and binder material, that is, the braze powder and binder material not selectively heated by the laser, are removed from the surface.

Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for monitoring shipping containers. A system comprises a shipping container, a sensing component, and a transmission device. The shipping container defines an interior compartment. The sensing component is positioned within the interior compartment and comprises one or more sensors, a sensing component battery, a sensing component microcontroller, and a communication chip. The one or more sensors sense atmospheric data. The sensing component microcontroller has a memory and receives the atmospheric data sensed by the one or more sensors at a predetermined interval and stores the atmospheric data in the memory. The transmission device is external to the interior compartment and comprises a receiver and a transmitter. The receiver receives data transmitted by the sensing component. The transmitter transmits the received data to a storage location. The transmission device is paired with the sensing component or an interior component contained within the interior compartment.

Abstract: A seal assembly is disclosed for sealing a higher pressure fluid cavity from a lower pressure fluid cavity. The seal assembly comprises a runner mounting assembly, a circumferential ceramic runner carried by the runner mount assembly, and a carbon seal ring sealingly engaged to the runner. The runner mount assembly comprises an annular central junction portion radially spaced from the shaft, a pair of shaft engaging flanges, and a pair of runner engaging flanges. The runner is radially positioned between the runner engaging flanges of the runner mount assembly and the carbon seal ring.

Abstract: An oil delivery system is provided that includes a tank for a gas turbine engine, where the tank is positioned radially outward from a compressor section, a combustor section, and/or a turbine section of the gas turbine engine. The tank is configured to store oil for the gas turbine engine. The oil delivery system further includes a primary lubrication system including a sump of a power gearbox, a pump, and an oil feed line. The oil feed line extends from the tank to the primary lubrication system. The oil feed line is configured to allow a flow of oil to pass from the tank to the pump and from the pump through the power gearbox to the sump of the power gearbox.
