The guide post in includes a superior portion that engages a femoral component of a knee prosthesis in a rotated orientation. When the guide post engages the femoral component it may not distract as if it was not engaged. This allows for a control and constraint of such distraction when the knee is rotated and in a weaker position.

A method and apparatus for enabling access to an intramedullary canal of a femur through a femoral knee joint prosthesis includes a first condylar portion and a second condylar portion. The first condylar portion has a first femoral bearing surface and the second condylar portion has a second femoral bearing surface. An inner condylar portion extends between the first condylar portion and the second condylar portion and defines an opening passing therethrough. A seal member is operable to substantially seal the opening such that the seal member is further operable to be opened to enable access to the intramedullary canal of the femur without having to remove the femoral knee joint prosthesis from the femur. A method for enabling access to the intramedullary canal of the femur through the femoral knee joint prosthesis is also provided.

This invention relates to a floating bearing knee joint prosthesis having a fixed tibial post used for replacing the articulating knee portion of a femur and a tibia. The floating bearing knee joint prosthesis includes a femoral component, a tibial component, a guide post and a bearing member. The femoral component includes an engagement member, a first femoral bearing surface and a second femoral bearing surface. The tibial component includes a tibial bearing surface. The guide post extends from the tibial component and is operable to be engaged by the engagement member of the femoral component. The bearing member includes a first bearing surface that articulates with the first femoral bearing surface, a second bearing surface that articulates with the second femoral bearing surface and a third bearing surface that articulates with the tibial bearing surface. The bearing member further includes a posterior lip extension that substantially inhibits the bearing member from dislocating upon flexion of the knee joint prosthesis. The bearing member also defines an opening that receives the guide post where the opening is configured to substantially inhibit rotational movement of the bearing member relative to the tibial component in extension.

The method also includes preparing at least a two-dimensional image model of the knee joint using the knee-joint scan and the determined mechanical axis, and preparing a pre-operative surgical plan based on the image of the knee joint.

The acetabular guide includes a patient-specific engagement surface designed to be complementary and mateable with a corresponding surface of the patient's pelvic anatomy. The acetabular guide is designed during a pre-operative plan for the patient by a three-dimensional reconstruction of the anatomy of the patient using two-dimensional medical images. The patient-specific engagement surface has a first portion mateable with a portion of the acetabulum of the patient. The acetabular guide includes a guiding element that extends from the acetabular guide opposite to the first portion of engagement surface. The guiding element defines a bore designed to be oriented along an alignment axis for an acetabular implant when the acetabular guide is engaged to the acetabulum.
