摘要： A color conversion section converts R-, G- and B-image signals input by the reading of a color image on an original to C-, M- and Y-color signals. A histogram producing means of an image processing section produces density histograms of the respective color signals on the basis of the converted C-, M- and Y-color signals. An original type determination means determines a type of the original on the basis of the histogram data signals. A colored background determination means determines a colored background on the basis of the histogram data signals. A background process presence/absence determination means determines whether a background process is to be executed or not, on the basis of an original type determination result signal and a colored background determination result signal. A CPU produces, when it is determined that the background process is to be executed, a background process table using the density histogram values of the respective color signals. A density adjustment means performs density adjustment of the respective color signals input from the color conversion section, on the basis of the background process table.

In one aspect of the invention, the method begins by receiving document image data including one or more image regions. The method determines for each image region whether the region includes any image data corresponding to a first image type. The method then prints regions including image data corresponding to the first image type according to a first pixel management process and prints regions not including image data corresponding to the first image type according to a second pixel management process.

According to the system, pixel data of an image is input and block selection processing is performed on the input pixel data to determine types of pixels within the image. It is then determined, based on the block selection processing, if a pixel is in an object area of the image and, if the pixel is determined to be in an object area of the image, the pixel is processed. Such processing may include detecting a proximity of the pixel to an edge, detecting a chromaticity of the pixel and detecting a width of a character in which the pixel is included.
