A graphical user interface displays a first menu image on a display for an operating system on a computer. The first menu image includes a taskbar image which carries button images selectable by the user to carry out a function. The GUI also displays a second menu image on the display for a navigator software which is running under the operating system. The navigator software provides a quasi-operating system environment. The GUI displays the taskbar image in the second menu image whereby the user can carry out functions of the operating system from within the quasi-operating system environment provided by the navigator software. Three visual walls are arranged on the GUI as if the user is standing inside a three-dimensional cube and open to the sky. Clicking once either on the side walls moves the contents of the side wall to the center, in effect rotating the cube. When a wall is centered, the user can activate any function in the wall by clicking on a button. Buttons displayed in the side wall may be immediately activated by double clicking so the user does not have to center the side wall.

A method and system for enabling a visually impaired computer user to distinctly visualize individual objects classified among multiple classes of objects within a graphical user interface environment. Within the graphical user interface environment, graphical user interface objects are classified among multiple classes of objects. An audio signal, having at least two audible characteristics, is associated with each object within a class of objects. The first audible characteristic is common among all objects within a class of objects and unique among all objects in other classes of objects. The second audible characteristic is unique among all objects within a class of objects. Thereafter, a composite audible signal is generated for each displayed object which includes audio signals which each include these two audible characteristics. By listening to the first audible characteristic, which is associated with all objects within a particular class, a visually impaired user may be able to determine how many classes of objects are displayed, and distinguish those classes of objects from one another. By listening to the second audible characteristic, which is unique among all audible characteristics associated with objects in the same class, a visually impaired user may be able to determine how many objects are displayed within a particular class, and distinguish those objects from one another. By enabling a visually impaired user to distinguish classes of objects, and the distinguish objects in a particular class, such a user may perform computer operations and utilize a graphical user interface more efficiently.

Disclosed is a computer audio interface having stereo and filtered sound effects to enable blind users to operate a graphical user interface. Stereo balance and incremental filtering are used along separate axes to guide a blind or visually impaired user within an area of a graphical user interface, particularly the client area of a window. As the pointer approaches the left boundary of the client area, the sounds representing the client area come more and more exclusively from the left audio channel. Likewise, when approaching the right boundary, the sound shifts to the right channel. Additionally, as the pointer is moved toward the top of the window client area, the pitch of the sound increases in stepwise fashion.

An interchangeable memory is inserted into the system corresponding to the book which is being read. An interchangeable or permanent system memory is further provided for storing commonly used words or problems with respect to the subject matter of the book therein. The system operates by inputting a page number and a portion of a word or problem in the book into the system, and the system matches this portion on the specific page with a word or problem in its memories. The word and definition may then be output by the system so that the reader understands the word or problem as it is being used. In addition, alternate definitions of the word or similar problems to the problem which is output may be provided to the reader for further aid in comprehension.

An advanced user interface for use with a computer system operating on an integrated operating environment. The integrated operating environment allows a plurality of application programs to be running simultaneously, one of which is designated the active application program to which all input data is directed. The advanced user interface allows a user to select among user-friendly input devices to operate any application program according to his individual preferences without change to the application program code. The advanced user interface includes alternate input modules which translate the input signals transmitted from the various input devices into input messages useable by the rest of the interface. The advanced user interface also includes interface profiles which contain mappings of the input messages against corresponding commands useable by the application programs, the integrated operating environment or other modules of the advanced user interface itself. An environment link module refers to the interface profiles and matches the input message against the corresponding command for the application program active at the time the input signal was transmitted and send the corresponding command to that application program. The environment link module matches the input message against a corresponding command for an application which owns a window in which a key feature of a gesture is made.

The sound signal processing circuit has M times N controllable amplifiers arranged in an M by N matrix in which each of the M inputs is distributed to N controllable amplifiers and the outputs of M controllable amplifiers are combined to provide each of the N outputs. A host based status array is used to minimize the overhead of the communications between the host and the PC. The IBM 3270-PC or other microprocessor with a host communications interface receives existing, summarized information and reduces the information to a complete, accurate picture of the multiple applications that enables the operator to have timely information and respond effectively in a complex DP environment. The alarm information is organized to effectively call the operator's attention to a key problem quickly and efficiently. Key alarm messages can be designated as voice messages which are automatically translated and output as synthesized voice alerts. Threshold conditions can be called to the operator's attention by specifying tolerances, that once exceeded, trigger an electronic tone of designated frequency and duration.

The invention provides an interactive system and method for the control of video playback devices such as video tape recorders. The system allows user interaction with a prerecorded program which includes live video displays and alphanumeric displays. The user can select the program desired and also inputs answers to specific questions asked by the program. A standard video playback device is modified by the addition of a small computer and memory circuit, and character display circuitry. The invention operates the video playback device to produce a video output. Prerecorded program information includes data dumps interspersed with video display segments and the data in the data dumps is recovered by a data recovery circuit. The computer then commands the video playback device to access different portions of the recorded video program in response to user input and the operating instructions provided by the data recovered.
