A caliper machining apparatus for machining a caliper for a disc brake is disclosed which comprises: a cutter for cutting the caliper, a facing mechanism for positioning and facing the cutter relative to the caliper, and a caliper holding jig. The jig supports the caliper at several surfaces for machining by the cutter. The facing mechanism includes a hollow rotary spindle, a facing head fixed to the rotary spindle, a slider movable only in a diametric direction of the facing head, and slidingly moved in eccentric relation with a rotary center of the rotary spindle and a facing shaft passing through the rotary spindle. The facing shaft is allowed to rotate with the rotary spindle but to be displaceable in an axial direction relative to the rotary spindle. The rotary spindle is rotated by a main motor. The facing shaft is moved in the axial direction by the rotation of a facing motor.

A rotor disc brake lathe for simultaneously machining both left- and right-hand disc brake rotors of a vehicle wherein the rotors are mounted on opposite ends of a centrally supported horizontal drive shaft, and a pair of tool arm assemblies are mounted on both opposite end regions of a horizontal cross arm which is moved vertically on machine ways to effect selective engagement with and machining of the rotors. A spring biased vibration dampener is mounted on one of each pair of tool arms for engagement with one side of each rotor during the machining operation. The lathe device comprises a portable driving device, which via a clutch rotates the brake disc, when this is still mounted on the wheel shaft and the vehicle wheel being dismounted from the brake disc. A tool holder which can be attached to the mounting points for the dismounted brake yoke in the vehicle and which is provided with two individually adjustable lathe tools one for each side of the brake disc, is arranged adjacent to the driving device. Means for dressing a work piece in a lathe having a rotary driven shaft includes a work holder assembly adapted to hold a drum or disc in position for dressing a cylindrical face or a circular end face. The work holder assembly includes adapter members having conical faces for engaging a drum therebetween or for engaging in a central hole of a disc. A rigid circular plate has spaced threaded adjustable bolts bearing on the disc or an end wall of the drum. Spacer members bear against the circular plate. Another bolt seats in an end of the rotary driven shaft while the adapter members, plate, and spacer members are disposed in axial alignment on the shaft. The rigid plate and adjustment bolts hold the work piece in axial alignment with the shaft, and correct distortion in the disc or end wall of the drum. They also prevent vibration of the work piece during dressing.

A tool device, especially for machining the sides of a disc shaped workpiece in which indexable cutting tool holders are spaced radially from the axis of rotation of the workpiece with each holder supporting a plurality of cutting elements in uniformly circumferentially spaced relation. The holders may be connected to index in unison and jaw clutch elements are provided for locating the holders in each indexed position. A reporting system, employing a microprocessor, tracks the operation of an on-vehicle brake lathe and provides records of the resurfacing operations performed by the lathe. Identification of the vehicle and wheel position of a brake disk to be resurfaced are inputted using an operator interface, and stored in a temporary memory. When tool bits of the lathe are positioned to set a depth of cut, a thickness monitor indicates the resulting thickness for the brake disk, which is compared to a minimum thickness specification for the inputted vehicle and wheel position to determine whether the disk can be resurfaced to meet the specification. If so, a cutting operation evaluator monitors a continuity checker that is responsive to contact of the tool bits and the disk to determine when the resurfacing operation is complete, at which time the collected data can be reported.
