A seating and sealing insert for mounting a heated injection molding nozzle in a well in a mold. The hollow insert has a cylindrical central portion extending between a rear seating portion and a forward sealing portion. The rear seating portion is outwardly flanged to seat in the well in the mold and forms an inner seat to receive a cylindrical support flange of the nozzle to accurately support the nozzle in the well in the mold. The forward sealing portion has a V - shaped forward face and inner and outer surfaces which are forced outwardly by melt pressure to seal against the nozzle and the mold. Thus, the seating and sealing insert provides an insulative air space between the heated nozzle and the surrounding mold and the forward sealing portion prevents the escape of pressurized melt into the insulative air space.

A quick set sprue bushing for use in combination with injection molding apparatus. The bushing is made from a beryllium-free alloy that will rapidly dissipate heat. The alloy is of the copper, nickel type and reduces the cure time by between 15% and 20%. The significance of being beryllium-free is that it has been established that beryllium is a carcinogen and endangers workers. A bushing of this type results in the sprue or tail of the molten plastic type cooling as rapidly as possible for removal of the molded product from the mold. The bushing is elongated and has a generally conical passageway along its longitudinal centerline axis that diverges in the direction of the flow of material therethrough, and is further provided with a stainless steel bushing insert at the end that receives the injection mold apparatus nozzle such that the bushing will not conduct heat from the injection apparatus to the mold but will dissipate heat from the mold that comes from the molten material.

A stack injection molding system for conveying melt from an upstream heated nozzle seated in a fixed mold platen to an aligned downstream heated nozzle in a movable mold platen. The upstream dowstream nozzles each have a nose portion with a forward face which abuts against each other in the parting line in the closed position. The melt passage extends through aligned central melt bores in the nozzles which taper inwardly adjacent the forward faces to form a sprue gate where they join. While both nozzles have an integral electrical heating element, only the heating element of the upstream nozzle has a circular forward portion which is brazed in the nose portion to encircle the melt bore and provide more heat and better control adjacent the sprue gate. Before the mold is opened along the parting line for ejection during the injection cycle, power to the heating elements of the nozzles is turned off to avoid drooling of melt from the open sprue gate.

This invention relates to an injection molding system having an axially aligned forward and rearward heated nozzle mounted in tandem. The rearward nozzle is seated in a fixed position, while the forward nozzle reciprocates between a retracted open position and a forward closed position to provide valve gating. The forward nozzle has a rearwardly extending sleeve portion which projects into the rearward nozzle to connect the melt bores of the nozzles as the forward nozzle reciprocates. The forward nozzle has a heated nose portion with a tip which seats in the gate in the closed position. A pneumatically actuated piston bears against the rear end of the forward nozzle to drive it to the closed position. Injection melt pressure around the nose portion drives the forward nozzle back to the open position.

This invention relates to a hot tip gated multicavity injection molding system wherein an elongated heated probe extends centrally in a straight portion of the melt passage leading to each gate in a position wherein a tip end of the probe is centrally aligned adjacent the gate. One part of the straight portion of the melt passage is formed by a locating sleeve which is seated in the cavity plate and has spaced pins which extend inwardly to contact the outer surface of the probe to accurately locate the probe with the tip end in central alignment with the gate. Each probe has a central heating element with a double thickness portion extending to provide additional heat where the pins contact the probe. One of the pins is hollow to receive a thermocouple to measure the temperature of the melt flowing past the pins. Another part of the straight portions of the melt passage is formed by a cylindrical spacer collar which extends between the manifold and each locating sleeve to provide an insulating space of a curtain width between the manifold and the cavity plate.

The invention relates to a single nozzle injection molding system in which the nozzle is reciprocated longitudinally to valve gate the flow of melt to the cavity. The nozzle has a pointed tip which seats in the gate in the forward closed position and is retracted to the open position. The nozzle is secured against rotation, and an inner collar is secured to it. This inner collar threadably engages a surrounding outer collar which is free to rotate, but secured longitudinally. A pneumatic piston is connected to the outer collar to rotate it through a predetermined angle. Thus, when the outer collar is rotated in one direction, the inner collar and nozzle are driven to the forward closed position, and when the outer collar is rotated in the opposite direction the inner collar and nozzle are retracted to the open position.

This invention relates to a valve gated injection molding system in which melt flows through an elongated manifold to a number of spaced nozzles to fill a single non-linear cavity. Each nozzle is mounted against a manifold offset block which is bolted to the side of the manifold. Pressurized melt from the manifold flows through a melt duct in each manifold block and through the central bore of the respective nozzle to a gate into the cavity. Actuating mechanism is mounted to reciprocate a valve pin extending through each manifold block and nozzle. Each manifold offset block can be mounted with a different orientation on the side of the manifold to properly space the gates along the non-linear cavity to ensure it completely fills as quickly as possible. Slight lateral movement of each manifold block relative to the manifold is permitted to avoid melt leakage due to misalignment of the nozzles as a result of thermal expansion of the manifold.
