Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for incorporating manual changes to the setpoint for a thermostatic controller into long-term programming of the thermostatic controller. For example, one or more of the exemplary systems compares the actual setpoint at a given time for the thermostatic controller to an expected setpoint for the thermostatic controller in light of the scheduled programming. A determination is then made as to whether the actual setpoint and the expected setpoint are the same or different. Furthermore, a manual change to the actual setpoint for the thermostatic controller is compared to previously recorded setpoint data for the thermostatic controller. At least one rule is then applied for the interpretation of the manual change in light of the previously recorded setpoint data.

Abstract: A controller for an HVAC system comprises an interface, a memory, and a processor. The interface receives data related to user interactions with the system, and receives a temperature of the enclosed space. The memory stores an accumulated user discomfort value and discomfort score values, associated with user interactions. The processor determines a difference between the enclosed space temperature and a setpoint temperature. The processor determines whether the temperature difference exceeds a first threshold, and in response to determining that, determine whether a user has interacted with the system. In response to determining that the user has interacted with the system, the processor determines a current user discomfort value based on the discomfort score values, updates the accumulated user discomfort value, and determines whether the accumulated user discomfort value exceeds a second threshold. In response to determining that, the processor generates an alert indicating that a user discomfort event has occurred.

Abstract: A method of harvesting power from a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system using an HVAC controller may include harvesting power from the HVAC system and measuring an electrical characteristic of the HVAC controller. The electrical characteristic may indicate whether the power harvested from the HVAC system is high enough to risk interfering with a normal operation of the HVAC system. The method may also include increasing the power harvested from the HVAC system until the electrical characteristic indicates that the HVAC controller is at risk of interfering with the normal operation of the HVAC system.

Abstract: A thermostat is described for controlling air temperature in a building. The time associated with causing the controlled air temperature to reach a target temperature is estimated and displayed to a user. Input from a user indicating the target temperature can be received and the estimating and displaying can be carried out in real time. The thermostat can be wall-mounted or the user input can be received and estimated time can be displayed using a remote device, for example that communicates wirelessly with other components of the HVAC system.

Abstract: A system for conditioning air in a building including a fan-coil unit arranged adjacent to or within an indoor space within the building and additionally configured to at least one of heat and cool the air of the indoor space, and a scrubber arranged adjacent to or within the indoor space, the scrubber configured during a scrub cycle for scrubbing of indoor air from the indoor space. The scrubber includes one or more adsorbent materials arranged therein to adsorb at least one predetermined gas from the indoor air during the scrub cycle, and an exhaust, wherein the scrubber is configured during a purge cycle to direct a purging air over and/or through the adsorbent materials to purge at least a portion of the at least one predetermined gas adsorbed by the adsorbent materials during the scrub cycle from the adsorbent materials and thereafter exhausting the flow via the exhaust.

Abstract: HVAC schedules may be programmed for a thermostat using a combination of pre-existing schedules or templates and automated schedule learning. For example, a pre-existing schedule may be initiated on the thermostat and the automated schedule learning may be used to update the pre-existing schedule based on users' interactions with the thermostat. The preexisting HVAC schedules may be stored on a device or received from a social networking service or another online service that includes shared HVAC schedules.

A plurality of sensors sense ambient conditions associated with exterior and interior conditions of a venue. A context component infers or determines context of an occupant of the venue. A crowd estimation component infers, based at least in part on mining social networks, size of crowd expected at the venue. A comfort model component implicitly and explicitly trained on occupant comfort related data analyzes information from the plurality of sensors, the crowd estimation component and context component. A comfort controller adjusts environmental conditions of the venue based at least in part on output of the comfort model component. The adjustments to venue environment can optionally be differentiated by zone.

The system includes a refrigeration unit including a compressor, a condenser fan, a controller, and a sound controller. The method includes determining, by a controller, a cooling requirement of a conditioned space. The controller also determines a sound level operating range for the refrigeration unit. The method further includes the controller applying a cooling setting based on the cooling requirement and the sound level operating range.
