A system and method for dynamic receive diversity allocation. A communications device comprises a first physical layer (PHY) unit, a second PHY unit, a first signal path coupled to a first antenna and to the first PHY unit, a switchable signal path coupled to a second antenna and switchably coupled to the first PHY unit and the second PHY unit, and a switch control unit coupled to the second antenna. The switch control unit dynamically generates a control signal used to switchably couple the second antenna to either the first PHY unit or the second PHY unit. The second antenna may be used to provided a needed transmit or receive antenna or an extra antenna for use in increasing diversity. Switching antennas reduces the total number of antennas and support hardware, such as digital processing hardware, for wireless communications standards having a high ratio of idle to busy time.

An apparatus and method for interference alignment and cancellation in a wireless communication system of a multi-user communication environment are provided. The apparatus includes a plurality of receivers, each receiver including a plurality of antennas for receiving signals from a plurality of transmitters. Each of the receivers detects signals of multiple users in a designed order and performs a specific interference alignment on the remaining signals. Also, each of the receivers transmits information about the detected user signal to other receivers to enable the other receivers to cancel the received user signal and perform a user signal detection and a specific interference alignment operation. Accordingly, it is possible to present various types of transmitter/receiver structures that can reduce the complexity while implementing the maximum capacity in an interference environment between a multi-user and single-user TX/RX pair.

Systems and methods for the selection of antennas in aircraft navigation systems are provided. In one embodiment, a navigation receiver system for an aircraft comprises: a first aircraft antenna that receives transmitter signals from fixed-location ground transmitters and a second aircraft antenna that receives transmitter signals from the fixed-location ground transmitters, wherein the first aircraft antenna has a first gain pattern that is different from a second gain pattern of the second aircraft antenna; a switch coupled to a first receiver and the first and second aircraft antenna; and a switch controller coupled to the switch. The switch controller operates the switch to electrically couple the first receiver to either the first or second aircraft antenna based on a determination of whether the first gain pattern or the second gain pattern provides higher gain in a direction of a first fixed-location ground transmitter of the fixed-location ground transmitters.
