An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programable attenuation and a programable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator. The VCOs in the PLLs are centered using a control circuit to center the tuning capacitance range. A differential crystal oscillator is advantageously used as a frequency reference. Differential signal transmission is advantageously used throughout the receiver.

A receiving wave containing a desired signal and received through an antenna is inputted to an interstage band-pass filter 4 after the component outside a receiving band of the receiving wave has been attenuated by a receiving band-pass filter 2a. A phase locked loop circuit 9 outputs a frequency control voltage corresponding to a selected channel to a voltage control oscillator 8 and also outputs this frequency control voltage to an interstage band-pass filter 4 as a band control voltage thereof. The voltage control oscillator 8 generates a local carrier wave in response to the frequency control voltage. The interstage variable band-pass filter 4 has a passing band width which is a little wider than channel band width and varies its passing band in response to the band control voltage so as to include the selected channel, thereby attenuating the component outside the passing band of the receiving wave inputted from the low noise amplifier 3 and then inputs the receiving wave to a mixer 5. Accordingly, if a frequency which causes a single-signal interference is located in the receiving band apart from the selected channel frequency by a half of the intermediate frequency, the interference wave of this frequency can be attenuated.

The high Q is achieved via active feedback with an amplitude control loop. The frequency control of the active filter is achieved by means of a frequency locked loop. Both control loops compare the thermal noise of the active filter itself to voltage and frequency references to achieve the stable operating point. Control loops are normally slow relative to the transmitted data, hence avoiding the data altering the operating point of the filter.

A TVRO receiver for the reception of frequency modulated satellite broadcast signals is provided with the capability of efficiently rejecting image frequencies generated as the received signals undergo intermediate frequency translation. A TVRO tuner, which includes a super-heterodyne circuit having a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), means for supplying a controlling tuning voltage to the VCO, and a mixer for combining incoming 1st IF signals with the output frequency of the VCO to reduce the frequency of the 1st IF signals to a selected 2nd IF frequency, is provided with a tracking filter which is adapted to pass only the incoming 1st IF signals and effectively reject any image frequencies generated at the received signal frequencies. The tracking filter comprises at least one low-pass filter section and has a cut-off frequency which is controlled by the same tuning voltage used to regulate the output frequency of the VCO in such a way that the filter rejects frequencies exceeding the VCO output frequency. The filter is designed so that image frequencies, which are generated during the intermediate frequency translation stage as the sum of a given VCO output frequency and the selected 2nd IF frequency, fall substantially beyond the filter cut-off frequency and are thereby attenuated. The tracking filter allows adequate rejection of image frequencies without need for accurate tuning of the low-pass filter sections or precisely matched variable capacitance devices.

The system preferably includes a voltage tunable preselector filter whose output is applied to a mixer, a voltage tunable injection filter for filtering a local oscillator signal and for applying the filtered signal to the mixer, and tuning control circuitry. A multiplexing arrangement enables a plurality of control voltages for controlling respective ones of a plurality of varactor controlled tunable filters, employed, e.g., prior to the tuner of a television receiver to reject undesired signals, to be generated by a single digital to analog (D/A) converter. A controller, which may, e.g., comprise a microcomputer, sequentially applies digital control words to the D/A converter and substantially synchronously causes the resultant control voltages generated by the D/A converter to be applied, through respective switches to the tunable filters. The control voltages are applied to capacitors connected to d.c. control lines for the tunable filters. The high impedance of the varactor diodes included in the filters enables the capacitors to store respective control voltages for relatively long intervals before the control voltages need to be refreshed. This enables a large number of tunable filters to be controlled by a single D/A converter.

Radio receiving apparatus for receiving signals in plural frequency bands. Plural signal processing channels are provided, each channel being associated with a respective frequency band and each being tunable to different frequencies within its associated band to derive information signals when tuned to broadcast frequencies. Depending upon which of the signal processing channels is tuned to a broadcast frequency, a controllable switch connects that channel to an output circuit so as to supply the derived information signals thereto. A pulse generator generates intermittent pulse signals when the tuning condition of at least one of the signal processing channels is changed. These pulse signals are used to sample the tuning condition of that signal processing channel to determine if that channel is tuned to a broadcast frequency. A switch control circuit controls the switch to connect to the output circuit the particular signal processing channel which is tuned to a broadcast frequency.
