    摘要: A method and apparatus is provided to retain elements of the spine and/or pelvis in a desired spatial relationship. A plurality of fasteners are connected with a plurality of the elements. A longitudinal member is connected with the fasteners by a plurality of connector members. The longitudinal member and fasteners are movable relative to each other to adjust the distance between the longitudinal member and fasteners to thereby obtain the desired spatial relationship between the longitudinal member and elements to which the fasteners are connected. Once the longitudinal member and fasteners have been positioned in the desired spatial relationship, clamps are engaged to hold the longitudinal member, fasteners and connector members against relative movement. To provide for the adjustability of the longitudinal member relative to the fasteners, oblong openings are formed in the connector members. In one specific method of adjusting the position of the longitudinal member relative to the fasteners, the longitudinal member is rotated about an axis which extends through a portion of the longitudinal member.

    摘要: An apparatus for use in retaining spinal elements in a desired spatial relationship includes a fastener for engaging a spinal element. A longitudinal member is positionable along the spinal column. A connector member interconnects the fastener and the longitudinal member. The connector member has a mounting section with surface means defining a first opening through which the fastener extends. The longitudinal member extends through a second opening in the connector member. The axis of the opening through which the longitudinal member extends is perpendicular to top and bottom surfaces of the connector member. The mounting section has a side surface extending at an acute angle to the top and bottom surfaces. The connector member includes a surface that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the opening through which the longitudinal member extends. The side surface of the mounting section extends at an acute angle to the surface of the connector member which is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the opening through which the longitudinal member extends.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for moving a vertebra to a desired relationship with other vertebrae and for maintaining the desired relationship. Mounting blocks are attached to the vertebrae. Pivot members are threaded onto a rod. The pivot members are received in the mounting blocks with the rod extending between two mounting blocks. The rod is rotated to move a vertebra relative to the other vertebrae. The mounting blocks are then tightened around the pivot members to maintain the vertebrae in the desired relationship.

    摘要: An improved fastener is provided for use in retaining vertebrae in a desired spatial relationship. The fastener has a mounting section with a first external thread to engage a vertebra. The fastener has a retaining section with a second external thread to engage an internal thread on a retaining element, such as a nut. A pair of parallel flats are formed on opposite sides of the retaining section. The flats are spaced apart by a distance which is substantially the same as or greater than a root diameter of the external thread on the retaining section. A driving recess in an axially outer end of the retaining section has arcuate corner portions which receive force to effect rotation of the fastener relative to a vertebra engaged by the mounting section. The arcuate corner portions of the driving recess are offset from a plane containing the longitudinal central axis of the retaining section and extending perpendicular to the flats.
