    摘要: A fluid rotary union (FRU) includes a first member and a second member. The first member includes a plurality of spaced longitudinally directed bores of different lengths, each of which terminate at an associated radially directed bore communicating the longitudinally directed bores with an outer surface of the first member. The second member includes a first housing, a plurality of longitudinally adjacent segments and a plurality of couplers positioned between adjacent ones of the segments and the first housing and an adjacent one of the segments. Each of the segments has at least one circumferential groove formed into an inner surface for providing fluid communication with one of the associated radially directed bores of the first member. A radially directed bore extends from each of the grooves in the segment to the outer surface of the segment.

    摘要: An off-axis rotary joint (20) for selectively enabling communication of a signal (i.e., electrical and/or optical) between a housing (21) mounted for rotation about an axis (y-y) relative to a hollow shaft assembly (22) at all permissible relative angular displacements (e.g., 0°, 180°, 360°, 540°, 720°, etc.) between the housing and shaft assembly, broadly includes: a first conductor (23) having an first end mounted on the second member and having a second end mounted on the first member, the first conductor being adapted to convey a signal between its ends; a first motor (24) operatively arranged to selectively rotate the first conductor first end through a desired angular displacement relative to the second member; a second conductor (25) having an first end mounted on the second member and having a second end mounted on the first member, the second conductor being adapted to convey a signal between its ends; a second motor (26) operatively arranged to selectively rotate the second conductor second end through a desired angular displacement relative to the first second member; an encoder (28) for monitoring the angular displacement of the first member relative to the second member; a first divider/combiner (29) communicating with the second end of each of the conductors; a second divider/combiner (30); a first connector (31) mounted on the first member for selectively communicating the first and second divider/combiners through the first conductor; a second connector (32) mounted on the first member for selectively communicating the first and second divider/combiners through the second conductor; and a controller (33) for selectively operating the first and second motors and the first and second connectors; whereby a signal may be conveyed though the joint at all permissible angular displacements of the housing relative to the shaft assembly.

    摘要: Fiber optic collimators are disclosed for use in fiber optic rotary joints (20) providing for improvement in insertion loss performance. One embodiment of the fiber optic collimator has a gradient-index rod lens (61) possessing a pitch of less than one-quarter. Improvement in insertion loss arises due to the increase in the effective focal length of the lens as the pitch is reduced, allowing the collimator to achieve a longer working distance. The increase in the effective focal length is accompanied by an increase in the back focal length of the lens, compared to the zero back focal length of the more typical quarter-pitch gradient-index rod lens. The increased back focal length can be filled by a cylindrical glass spacer (64), to which an optical fiber (68) is attached, resulting in a collimator with very similar form factor to the usual quarter-pitch gradient-index rod lens collimator. The increased back focal length can also be filled by a form of right-angle prism (71), to which an optical fiber is attached such that the fiber is oriented at 90 degrees to the optical axis of the lens useful for applications of pancake-style hybrid slip rings wherein the desired direction of fiber ingress to the rotary joint is perpendicular to the rotation axis of the rotary joint.

    摘要: A multi-channel fiber optic rotary joint (FORJ) includes an external housing, a stationary collimator array, a rotating collimator array, an all-reflective de-rotating prism and a gear ratio. The external housing contains an internal cavity having a longitudinal rotation axis. The stationary collimator array is affixed to the external housing approximate a first end of the internal cavity. The rotating collimator array is rotatably attached to the external housing approximate a second end of the cavity. The second end of the cavity is opposite the first end of the cavity. The rotating collimator array is configured to rotate about the rotation axis. The de-rotating prism is located along the rotation axis within the internal cavity between the stationary collimator array and the rotating collimator array. The prism is retained in a prism housing, which is rotatably attached to the external housing and the prism housing is configured to rotate about the rotation axis.
