摘要: The technology relates to health and lifetime estimation for a lighter-than-air vehicle. A method for vehicle health and lifetime estimation may include receiving flight data inputs associated with a vehicle, determining a gas temperature based on the flight data inputs, estimating a gas amount remaining in a balloon envelope of the vehicle, estimating a gas leak rate based on the gas amount, estimating a component lifetime representing an estimated lifetime of a component of the vehicle, and determining a remaining lifetime output based on one or both of the gas leak rate or the component lifetime, the remaining lifetime output indicating a remaining lifetime estimate for the vehicle. The method also may include simulating a terminal event and causing the vehicle to take an action based on the remaining lifetime estimate.

摘要: Aspects of the technology employ significantly reduce void formation beneath critical components on a printed circuit board (PCB). This is accomplished using advanced fabrication techniques that include employing alignment fixtures and solder standoffs to position duplexers, using nitrogen gas during the reflow process, and maintaining specific temperature and “time above liquideous” (TAL) controls. Certain types of components, such as duplexers used in communication circuit boards, can be highly susceptible to voids. Because such components are relatively large and block x-rays, it is challenging to determine whether voids have been formed beneath them. Thus, in many instances conventional fabrication techniques are insufficient to produce viable circuit boards that minimize void formation within acceptable tolerances. It may be mission critical to minimize voids, such as for PCBs used in communication modules deployed on high altitude platforms intended to operate in the stratosphere for extended periods of time.

摘要: A method and an antenna system are provided for a high-altitude platform (HAP) configured to move in a pattern in the stratosphere to provide coverage to a region of interest and compensate for HAP movement relative to the region of interest. HAP movement is monitored. When it is determined that the HAP has moved relative to the region of interest and, based on the relative movement, a first one of a plurality of antennas in the HAP is no longer able to cover a selected portion of the region of interest, an antenna array switching circuit in the HAP is used to adjust beams transmitted by the antennas by switching to a second one of the plurality of antennas to cover the selected portion of the region of interest, such that the communication services provided to the region of interest are not interrupted due to the movement of the HAP.

摘要: Methods and systems for controlling a group of aerial vehicles to meet a connectivity service objective are provided. A method may include causing aerial vehicles in the group to arrive at a target service area during a given arrival time window associated with the connectivity service objective, which may indicate a desired probability of service coverage of the target service area. The method further includes calculating a probability of service coverage of the target service area for the vehicles for a time period after the vehicles are expected to arrive at the target service area, determining whether the probability of service coverage meets a threshold, and causing the vehicles to operate according to a station seeking flight policy during the time period.

摘要: The disclosure provides a method of operating a communication network. The method includes receiving input data related to a state of the communication network and operation of the communication network. The method then includes determining a policy for the communication network based on the input data. The policy is a set of features for forming a plurality of communication links in the communication network over a time interval. The plurality of communication links provides one or more paths through the communication network. Determining the policy is based at least in part on utility values of previous policies. The utility values of previous policies are derived using simulation and/or real-world implementation of the previous policies. The communication network is then operated to implement the policy in the time interval.

摘要: The technology relates to navigating aerial vehicles using deep reinforcement learning techniques to generate flight policies. An operational system for controlling flight of an aerial vehicle may include a computing system configured to process an input vector representing a state of the aerial vehicle and output an action, an operation-ready policies server configured to store a trained neural network encoding a learned flight policy, and a controller configured to control the aerial vehicle. The input vector may be processed using the trained neural network encoding the learned flight policy. A method for navigating an aerial vehicle may include selecting a trained neural network encoding a learned flight policy from an operation policies server, generating an input vector comprising a set of characteristics representing a state of the aerial vehicle, selecting an action, by the trained neural network, based on the input vector, converting the action into a set of commands, by a flight computer, the set of commands configured to cause the aerial vehicle to perform the action, and causing, by a controller, the aerial vehicle to perform the action using the set of commands.

摘要: Aspects of the technology relate to temperature regulation for high altitude, long duration balloons, such as balloons that operate in the stratosphere for weeks, months or longer. A balloon covering overlays the balloon envelope. The material properties and configuration of the balloon covering are selected to enable it to automatically cover or expose portions of the envelope depending on environmental conditions. The covering has multiple layers of materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). The layers are chosen to have significantly different CTEs, and flaps are created in the envelope such that depending on the temperature, the flaps will either lie flat on the envelope or curl away from the envelope. In the former case, the flaps help to retain heat in the envelope, such as during nighttime operation. Conversely, in the latter case, the flaps permit heat to escape from the envelope, such as during daytime operation.
