摘要： An optical device includes an optical grating coupler and a plurality of optical waveguides coupled thereto. The optical grating coupler is formed along a planar surface of a substrate, and includes a pattern formed by ridges concentrically located on the surface about a center thereon. Each adjacent pair of ridges is separated by a groove. Each waveguide of the plurality of waveguides is oriented about radially with respect to the center, and has a first end that terminates near an outermost one of the ridges. The first ends are about uniformly spaced along the outermost one of the ridges.

摘要： One aspect provides an optical communication system. The system includes an optical-to-digital converter, a frequency estimator and a symbol synchronizer. The optical-to-digital converter is configured to receive an optical OFDM bit stream including an OFDM symbol bearing payload data and a symbol header preceding the OFDM payload data. The frequency estimator is configured to determine a carrier frequency offset of the payload data from the symbol header. The symbol synchronizer is configured to determine a starting location of the payload data within the bit stream by cross-correlating a synchronization pattern within the symbol header with a model synchronization pattern stored by the symbol synchronizer.

The multi-core optical fiber coupler includes a substrate having a planar surface and turning mirrors located along the planar surface, each of the turning mirrors having a reflective surface oriented to change a direction of light between a direction that is parallel to the planar surface and a direction that is substantially non-parallel to the planar surface. The turning mirrors form a lateral pattern along the planar surface, the lateral pattern being configured to approximately match a pattern of optical cores in a multi-core optical fiber whose end segment faces the pattern and is positioned substantially normal to the planar surface of the substrate.

摘要： An apparatus includes an N×1 spatial mode multiplexer, an optical source and an optical receiver. The spatial mode multiplexer has N input ports and an output port end-couplable to a multimode optical fiber. The multiplexer is configured to preferentially couple light between individual ones of the input ports and corresponding spatial optical modes of the multimode optical fiber. The optical source is connected to a first one of the input ports to launch an optical probe pulse into the fiber. The optical receiver is connected to electrically analyze an optical signal backscattered from the multimode optical fiber and output by a second one of the input ports in response to the launch of the optical probe pulse into the fiber.
