A plurality of different first marks are formed on at least one of the original and a reference plate held on the original stage. The position detection apparatus has a function of selecting a first mark in accordance with the illumination condition from a plurality of first marks, and detecting the relative position between the original and the substrate using the selected first mark and a second mark formed on the substrate stage.
