Described is a catalyzed soot filter wherein the inlet coating of the filter comprises an oxidation catalyst comprising platinum (Pt) and optionally palladium (Pd), wherein the outlet coating of the filter comprises an oxidation catalyst comprising Pd and optionally Pt, wherein the Pt concentration in the outlet coating is lower than the Pt concentration in the inlet coating and wherein the weight ratio of Pt:Pd in the outlet coating is in the range of from 0:1 to 2:1; and wherein the inlet coating and the outlet coating are present on the wall flow substrate at a coating loading ratio in the range of from 0.5 to 1.5, calculated as ratio of the loading of the inlet coating (in g/inch3 (g/(2.54 cm)3)):loading of the outlet coating (in g/inch3 (g/(2.54 cm)3)). Systems include such catalyzed soot filters, methods of diesel engine exhaust gas treatment and methods of manufacturing catalyzed soot filters are also described.

Provided are exhaust systems and components suitable for use in conjunction with gasoline engines to treat gaseous emissions such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxides. Layered three-way conversion (TWC) catalysts comprise an outer layer whose rhodium is supported by an oxygen storage component, such as a ceria-zirconia composite, and the outer layer is substantially free from alumina as a support. The rhodium-containing layer can be free of all other precious metals, such as platinum and palladium. A lower palladium layer is provided where the palladium is supported by a refractory metal oxide. The lower palladium layer can be free of rhodium and platinum and can contain an oxygen storage component that is the same or different from that in the rhodium-containing layer. Methods of making and using these catalysts are also provided.

Provided are exhaust systems and components suitable for use in conjunction with gasoline engines to capture particulates in addition to reducing gaseous emission such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxides. Exhaust treatment systems comprising a three-way conversion (TWC) catalyst located on a particulate filters are provided. Coated particle filters having washcoat loadings in the range of 1 to 4 g/ft3 result in minimal impact on back pressure while simultaneously providing TWC catalytic activity and particle trapping functionality to meet increasingly stringent regulations such as Euro 6. Sufficient to high levels of oxygen storage components (OSC) are also delivered on and/or within the filter. The filters can have a coated porosity that is substantially the same as its uncoated porosity. The TWC catalytic material can comprise a particle size distribution such that a first set of particles has a first d90 particle size of 7.5 μm or less and a second set of particles has a second d90 particle size of more than 7.5 μm. Methods of making and using the same are also provided.

There is disclosed a process for producing a catalyst. The process includes the steps of: a) combining a dendrimer polymer and metal salt in solution forming a metal ion complex; b) exposing the metal ion complex to a reducing environment forming a dendrimer metal nanocomposite; c) depositing the dendrimer metal nanocomposite onto a catalyst support material; d) removing a solvent from the dendrimer metal nanocomposite forming metal clusters; and e) removing the dendrimer polymer forming a catalyst. Additionally, there is disclosed a catalyst having a catalytic metal deposited on a substrate. The catalytic metal is formed in clusters having a size of from 2 to 150 atoms. In another aspect, the clusters may have a spacing of from 2 to 100 nanometers between adjacent metal clusters. Further, in another aspect, the metal clusters which comprise the catalyst have a size distribution in which 70% of the clusters are within 0.6 nm of the average diameter and 99% of the particles are within 1.5 nm of the average diameter.
