Rear latches include retainers connected to the base machine frame, and axially translatable and rotatable shafts connected to the fuser frame. An end of the shaft is received in a retainer upon axial translation of the shaft, and locked in place upon rotation of the shaft. The rear latches bias the fuser frame for proper gear mesh and paper path alignment.

The oil web system includes an oil web, an applicator roll in contact with a fuser roll, and a transfer station for transferring release oil from the web to the applicator roll. The oil web is advanced along a web path from a supply spool to a take-up spool. The applicator roll rotates against the fuser roll and receives oil from the oil web, and transfers the oil to the fuser roll. The applicator roll may be in direct contact with the web, and receive the oil directly from the web; or a transfer roll may be operated to receive the oil from the web and transfer the oil to the applicator roll.

A multi-functional fuser backup roll release mechanism and operating process are defined. In the event of a paper jam, the primary gear train from a prime mover to driven rolls of the imaging apparatus is interrupted, and a secondary drive train is engaged. The drive train operates a drive shaft, rotating a worm gear to control a cam and lever apparatus connected to springs and bellcranks at opposite ends of the backup roll. Upon the detection of a paper jam, or prolonged inactivity of the fuser, the nip between the fuser hot roll and backup roll is opened. During normal operation, the mechanism can be used to control the nip force between the fuser roll and the backup roll, to provide the optimal nip load for the media being processed, and the print glossiness desired.

An oil supply roller for an electrophotographic printer fuser allows silicone oil to exude from the oil supply roller onto the surface of the fuser hot roller in a controlled fashion to prevent toner from adhering to the fuser hot roller, and also serves to provide a smooth toner surface. A metering layer disposed on an outer surface of the roller provides an even, controlled flow of oil to the surface of the roller. Further, a buffer layer may be employed to decrease the overall volume of the oil bearing layer to decrease the effects of swelling in that layer. Therefore, a precisely metered supply of oil is provided to the fuser hot roller while reducing complexity and moving parts. A method for fabricating the fuser hot roller by impregnating silicone rubber with a toner repelling substance and disposing the impregnated rubber about a rotatable drive shaft is also provided.

A toner fuser system suitable for producing high quality color transparencies is provided. The fuser system includes a media conditioning assembly located directly downstream of a fuser assembly, which may be a roll fuser or an instant-on belt fuser. The conditioner assembly includes a convective heat source, a heating zone, and a convective circulation path past the heat source and the heating zone to provide convective heat transfer to a transparency in the heating zone. A transparency (or other media) with toner to be fused travels on a media path first through the fuser assembly and then through the heating zone of the conditioner assembly. The fuser assembly causes toner to adhere to the transparency just well enough to allow the transparency to pass into the conditioner. In the conditioner, the toner is reheated, thereby causing the surface of the toner to reflow into a smooth, glossy, and uniform surface that increases light transmission efficiency of color transparencies. Additionally, the system eliminates the need for silicone oil, which is used in some prior art systems to prevent sticking of the transparency to the fuser assembly.

A multi-level oiling device drive mechanism suitable for use in an imaging apparatus is disclosed. The drive mechanism includes a prime mover and gear train mounted to a frame of the base machine. A driven member of the oiling device, such as a web take-up spool in an oil web system, is driven by the gear train. When replacement of the oiling device is required, the driven member is disconnected from the gear train, and the device is replaced, without the need for replacing the drive mechanism.

A paper tray or fixed platform for loading paper includes an adjustable edge guide including a primary paper guide surface and a cantilever portion including an end surface, the end surface movable between retracted and extended positions, so that when the end surface is disposed in its extended position and the edge guide is moved to bring the end surface in contact with a supply of paper, the primary paper guide surface is sufficiently spaced away from the supply of paper to avoid paper pinching and excessive clearance conditions. The edge guide is molded as one piece with a living hinge, removed from the mold while warm, and a pin is inserted to prevent the cantilever portion from warping toward the guide surface during cooling.
