The zinc containing compound, oxygen-containing compound, and aluminum- or gallium-containing compound are mixed together for a sufficient time that an aluminum or gallium doped zinc oxide coating is formed on the surface at a deposition rate of greater than 5 nm/second.

Tin oxide having high mobility and a low electron concentration, and methods for producing layers of the tin oxide layers on a substrate by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) are disclosed. The tin oxide may undoped polycrystalline n-type tin oxide or it may be doped polycrystalline p-type tin oxide. When the layer of tin oxide is formed on a crystalline substrate, substantially crystalline tin oxide is formed. Dopant precursors for producing doped p-type tin oxide are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a method of strengthening brittle oxide pieces such as glass pieces with a siloxane-acrylate coating system that has superior weatherability, particularly hydrolytic stability. The coating system comprises a combination of a silane solution and a radiation-curable acrylate solution. The mixture is applied to a clean, brittle oxide surface. The silane solution comprises one or more silanes in a non-aqueous solvent and the radiation-curable acrylate solution comprises one or more acrylate or methacrylate monomers, acrylate or methacrylate oligomers, and initiators, such as photoinitiators.

Compounds of formula (I) are disclosed: ##STR1## wherein L.sup.1 is a main group atom, L.sup.2 is a neutral ligand, M is a transition element or a metal element of Group 13, 14, 15, or 16 of the Periodic Table, x is the number of coordination sites of M, R.sup.1 is a polymerizable group, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are ligands, and R.sup.5 is an anionic ligand. The compounds or monomers of formula (I) are capable of conversion to polymers by combination with one or more other known monomers, such as methyl methacrylate. Such polymers can then be added as a binder in a paint formulation to make marine antifouling coating compositions. Also described is a method to prevent fouling on surfaces wherein a composition containing a metal complex compound of formula (II): ##STR2## wherein M, x, L.sup.2, n, and R.sup.4 have the same meaning as in formula (I), is applied to the surface susceptible to fouling.

The device comprises of a substrate having a first refractive index, a transparent electrode that is coupled to an organic layer, where the transparent electrode has a second refractive index different from the first refractive index. An undercoat layer is selected that has a third refractive index to substantially match the first refractive index to the second refractive index. The undercoat layer is selected such that it has a capacity to reduce root mean square roughness of the transparent electrode film deposited. The undercoat layer is selected to improve electrical properties of the transparent electrode layer. The undercoat layer is provided between the substrate and the transparent electrode.
