In various embodiments, a device for controlled release of an active ingredient is provided, including a release aperture operably associated with a deflectable member, a base with a porous membrane substrate layer, and at least one chamber juxtaposed between the release aperture and the porous membrane layer. The chamber may contain a matrix including one or more active ingredients and an agent that expands when contacted with an aqueous solution. The device is suitable for implantation in a biological system and can be used for delayed and/or time release of specific drug dosages for various indications.

The deflectable member can be deflectable between an up-state and a down-state, the down-state capacitively coupling the deflectable member with the transmission line. The degree by which the deflectable member overlaps the first insulator can be adjusted to adjust the capacitance of the capacitive element and the resulting resonant frequency.

A microfluidic dynamic vapor control system adapted to change the chemistry of small drops by dynamically controlling the vapor content surrounding the drops. The small volume surface area ratio makes this an efficient mechanism for controlling chemistry in nanovolumes. The system uses small reservoirs of material that can produce vapor on demand, and microfluidic channels that direct the vapor into a small chamber that holds a drop of the solution of interest. By changing the vapors that enter the chamber, the chemical composition of the drop can be modified.

A micropump fabricated in a planar substrate is provided with a valving chamber which is communicated to a pumping chamber. The valving chamber has an inlet and outlet port. Both the valving chamber and pumping chamber have a liquid, electrically conductive piston disposed therein, which liquid piston is nonmiscible with the pumped working fluid and nonreactive with the substrate in which the chambers are formed. The valving piston is magnetohydrodynamically driven to selectively close either the inlet port or the outlet port. The pumping piston is magnetohydrodynamically driven to pull or push the working fluid through one of the inlet or outlet ports, through the valving chamber, into the pumping chamber, back out of the pumping chamber and through the other one of the inlet or outlet ports after activation of the valving piston. Both direct current and inductive magnetohydrodynamic drives are contemplated. The valving and/or pumping chambers may be shaped or narrowed in their dimensions to impose a mechanical bias on the respective valving and/or pumping pistons to assume a preferred position in their respective chambers when the magnetohydrodynamic drive is turned off.
