The I/O resources of an I/O firmware partition are shared by one or more other partitions of the environment, referred to as consumer partitions. The consumer partitions use the I/O firmware partition to access the I/O resources. Since the I/O firmware partitions are responsible for providing access to the I/O resources owned by those partitions, the consumer partitions are relieved of this task, reducing complexity and costs in the consumer partitions.

    摘要: A workstation controller is disclosed which operates in either full screen write mode or partial screen write mode. In one embodiment, the controller looks for a "Clear Display"(CD) command in the data stream from the host. If the data stream contains a CD command and if a screen image buffer is available, the controller operates in full screen write mode. Subsequent "Write to Device" (WTD) commands in the data stream are sent to the buffer, not to the device. When the controller detects the end of the data stream the entire contents of the buffer are sent to the display in one operation. If the controller does not detect a CD command in the data stream, or if the CD command is detected but a screen image buffer is not available, the controller operates in partial screen write mode. WTD commands in the data stream are sent directly to the display one at a time.

The user initially associates an iconic representation for each object and selects the information to be monitored for each object. Parameters which may be monitored include the number of times the user interacts with the object, the amount of time the user spent interacting with the object, or the passage of time. This information is then stored in a database. The user's interaction with each object is then monitored, and the visual characteristics of the iconic representations associated with each object are then altered in response to the user's interaction with each object.

    摘要: A computer system comprises a CPU, a main memory, and plurality of I/O Processors (IOPs), coupled to each other by a system I/O bus. The IOPs perform slave processing functions relating to I/O devices. A simulation protocol is defined for the IOPs, whereby the host CPU can command an IOP to execute a simulation script. The simulation script defines one or more I/O devices to be simulated, and specifies a simulated workload associated with the devices. The IOP executes the simulation script by sending simulated input streams to the host and receiving output destined for the simulated I/O devices from the host on the system I/O bus. An IOP may simulate multiple I/O devices, and may simulate I/O devices concurrently with servicing real I/O devices. In typical use, one or more applications programs will execute on the CPU concurrently with the execution of one or more simulation scripts in the IOPs attacked to the system I/O bus. The behavior of the system under such conditions can be used for capacity planning forecasts, for developing and debugging the application software, for reproducing and diagnosing intermittent error conditions, or for performing other tasks in which it is necessary to determine the characteristics of the system under hypothetical conditions.

    摘要: A dependent, nonprogrammable, character-based workstation terminal (DWS) supports a mouse. A terminal controller entirely within the DWS processes and displays mouse motions, but sends mouse button actuations, with the current mouse position, to a single workstation controller (WSC) handling many DWS'. The WSC processes the actuations according to a set of rules, and sends data streams to a main processor (MP) serving multiple WSCs. The MP executes user application programs, partially in response to data streams representing mouse events.
