A position of the at least one dart is estimated during pumping of fluid into the wellbore by measuring output of the sensors in the rod.

A pipe string in an oil well has a cable 2 slidingly attached along it. It may be necessary to break the pipe string. Apparatus is provided for controlling the position of a fracture in the cable, as it is desirable to break the cable at about the same point. The apparatus comprises a pocket 1 attached to the cable and having a passage through which the cable passes, and upper and lower nipples 5 and 6 attached to the cable in the pocket. The lower face 5′ of the nipple 5 is skewed relative to the lower internal face 3′ of the pocket and the facing faces (5″, 6′) of the two nipples are skewed relative to each other, so bending and kinking the cable when tension is applied. The cable therefore breaks at the bend or kink. The pipe string includes a plurality of such apparatuses located at spaced points along its length.

The binding chain threads are crossed over between successive interlocking members. The wrapping threads pass around the binding chain threads in a loop between successive interlocking members. The attachment sections, seen in a projection on the plane of the sliding clasp fastener, are disposed in the middle of the interlocking members, some distance from the interlocking heads but also some distance from the rearward return loops. The binding chain threads are disposed in the supporting tapes beneath the middle of the interlocking members and drawn on to the attachment sections by the loops of the wrapping threads which pass partly around the attachment sections.

A rod having an embedded optical fiber has a stiff composite outer layer (10) to make the rod self straightening to enable it to be pushed into a pipe or borehole from a spool. This can help enable a reduction of friction between rod and conduit and can enable longer reach. A barrier layer is provided to separate the fiber from the composite layer. The rod can be retrieved after use. The rod can be narrow enough to enable normal flow along the pipe or borehole, and can be injected and retrieved even when the pipe or borehole is pressurized. The fiber can be used for remote sensing of conditions along the conduit. Other tools can be inserted by the rod during the intervention.
