A new configuration and operating method therefore improves conventional continuous pickling and cold-rolling systems in response to increasing demands for high-propertied steel plates. The continuous pickling and cold-rolling equipment system comprises a uncoiling apparatus, a joining apparatus, an accumulating looper, a cleaning section, a pickling section, a cold rolling mill, a cutting apparatus, and a coiling apparatus. This configuration and associated operation method realize a rolling line having a substantially infinite number of mill stands enabling continuous or endless cold rolling without additional mill stands. Thereby, production of cold rolled steel strip with a large total reduction ratio for high-grade steel strips effectively using a small number of mill stands becomes practicable. At least one of the embodiments clearly shows acceptable productivity that can stand comparison with a typical conventional cold rolling system.

In a rolling mill comprising upper and lower work rolls crossed each other to perform strip crown control, a straight line connecting the center of an operation side screwdown screw and the center of a drive side screwdown screw is inclined relative to a line perpendicular to the rolling direction. A cross angle .theta. to be controlled is changed in opposite plus and minus directions about the straight line connecting both the screwdown centers. A large extent of strip crown control can be achieved with a smaller cross deviation than usual in the prior art, thereby permitting omission of an equalizer beam. Further, change in the extent by which strip crown is varied upon control with respect to the cross angle becomes substantially linear and hence control is more easily conducted. Since the cross angle 2.theta. between the two work rolls is larger than 2.degree., the transition temperature is not changed and uniformity in quality can be ensured.

High transconductance is obtained in GaAs FET's by forming a channel layer having a carrier concentration monotonously decreasing from the interface of the channel layer and a control gate toward the interface of the channel layer and the substrate it is formed in. This is established by ion implantation of the channel layer through an insulating layer, preferably an AlN layer, on a GaAs substrate. An AlN layer is preferable since it has no adverse effects on the GaAs substrate during ion implantation and the following heat treatment, allowing higher uniformity of the threshold voltages of the FET's.

A strip rolling mill includes a pair of upper and lower work rolls for rolling a strip, intermediate rolls for supporting each of the paired work rolls, and back-up rolls for supporting each of the intermediate rolls. Each of the work rolls is provided with a tapered portion at one end thereof so that the tapered portions of the work rolls are on opposite sides of roll bodies thereof with respect to roll axis directions. When the material with a constant width is being rolled, axial positions of the work rolls are set at appropriate positions and axial positions of the intermediate rolls are changed to control a thickness distribution in a width direction of the material being rolled. This arrangement significantly improves an edge drop and at the same time minimizes edge drop variations.

Each backing bearing assembly has a row of backing bearing units and shape control means by which the backing bearing units are adjustable relative to the work roll axis so that strip shape control can be applied. All backing bearing assemblies on one side of the strip path have such shape control means. In the mill at least two of the shape control means are independently operable so as to apply respectively different shape control patterns to the work roll.

In descaling and cold rolling of metal strip, there are performed the steps of joining strips longitudinally together, passing the joined strip continuously through a descaler, subdividing the descaled strip into long strip lengths and coiling the long strip lengths into large coils at a first coiling station having a plurality of coiling drums, feeding the large coils from said coiling station to a cold rolling mill and rolling each of them in the mill. The cold rolling mill is a reversing multi-pass cold rolling mill in which the strip is rolled in a plurality of passes with reversal. To achieve efficient use of the capacity of the reversing mill while reducing the size of the descaler, coiling and uncoiling of two said large coils respectively take place simultaneously at the first coiling station, and each long strip length is coiled a first time on one of the coiling drums at the coiling station on exit from said descaler and at least a second time on the same coiling drum during its rolling in the mill. Apparatus for carrying out such a method is also described.
