摘要:
An optical disc includes a plurality of recording layers, each layer having a lead-in area, a data area, and a lead-out area. A dedicated-reproducing area having a disc-related information zone, and a rewritable area are provided in at least one of the lead-in and lead-out areas of the optical disc. Accordingly, a reliability of a data recording/reproducing with respect to the optical disc is improved.

An optical recording medium having a read-only storage area and a writable storage area and a recording/reproducing apparatus and method therefor. The optical recording medium is a hybrid disc having both the read-only storage area, which is suitable for mass production of information having the same contents, and the writable storage area on which data can be recorded, updated or added at a user's option. The read-only storage area has a structure that is completely compatible with a digital versatile disc read only memory (DVD-ROM) specification, and the writable storage area is compatible with the recording/reproducing characteristics of a writable DVD specification so that an existing reproducing-only apparatus can read information from the read-only storage area, and data can be recorded in the writable storage area using an apparatus obtained by minimally changing an existing recording/reproducing apparatus while maintaining the physical recording characteristics of the existing recording/reproducing apparatus.

An optical recording medium is provided for allowing data to be recorded on, erased from, and reproduced from, and storing information about power levels of an erase pulse. The recorded erase pattern information may include information about power levels of first and last pulses of an erase pattern for erasing data. The first and last pulses of the erase pattern can be differently set depending on the differing kind of recording layer or layers of a disk or differing kinds of disks and recorded in a reproducible only area or rewritable area of the optical recording medium. Thus, by presetting the appropriate erase power levels, the time required for selecting an optimal erase power for the optical recording medium can be considerably reduced.

An electrophotographic toner, a method of preparing the electrophotographic toner, and an image forming apparatus using the electrophotographic toner. The electrophotographic toner includes a binder resin, a colorant, a releasing agent, and a spherical metal nanoparticle having a volume average diameter of about 10 to about 100 nm.

An error correction block having an extended format compatible with a standardized format of a conventional error correction block, a method and apparatus for generating the error correction block, and a method of correcting an error using the error correction block. The method of generating an error correction block includes adding extra parity information for error correction to input data which is of a smaller size than main data of a standardized reference format, thereby generating an extra error correction block which is the same size as the main data, and generating an error correction block complying with the reference format using the extra error correction block as the main data.

An optical disc is manufactured under a uniform condition by forming grooves and lands on the entire surface of the disc. The optical disc is configured to obtain a reliable reproduction signal, and the grooves and lands are formed on a lead-in area, a user data area and a lead-out area of the optical disc. Since the same manufacturing condition can be adopted in mastering discs, the yield can be enhanced and the manufacturing cost can be reduced.

A recording medium having a spare area for defect management, and a method and apparatus for allocating and assigning the spare area. A plurality of zones are formed as one group without prescribing the relationship between a zone and a group. Spare areas include a spare area for slipping replacement and a spare area for linear replacement. The spare area for slipping replacement is first allocated, and the spare area for linear replacement is allocated according to the size of an area remaining after the spare area for slipping replacement is used and the purpose for which a disc is used. When the spare area for linear replacement becomes deficient during use of the disc, a supplementary spare area for linear replacement is allocated in sequence from the rearmost of a logical file area, such that the spare area can be more flexibly and effectively allocated.

An optical disc includes tracking polarity information. The optical disc includes a clamping area, a lead-in area, a data area, and a burst cutting area (BCA). The BCA is present between the clamping area and the lead-in area and in which information regarding the optical disc is recorded, and the information is read before performing tracking in the data area. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain the tracking polarity information and/or reflectivity information without trial and error and directly record or reproduce user data in a data area of the optical disc.

An optical information storage medium and a method of recording thereon. The optical information storage medium has a lead-in area, a user data area and a lead-out area, and data indicating a maximum and/or a minimum writing speed, maximum and minimum writing speeds, or compatible writing speeds is recorded in a recordable region of at least one of the lead-in area and the lead-out area. The optical information storage medium and the method of recording on the media enable a disc drive to reliably record data on a disc which cannot achieve a prescribed recording speed due to manufacturing conditions, at an optimal speed considering the pre-recorded writing speed data.
