Many sensors could be used in a passive wireless mode. These include RLC, acoustic wave and magneto-elastic sensors. These types of sensors are designed to exhibit a change in fundamental frequency when exposed to environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, or chemicals. An interrogation circuit can inductively couple to the sensor and measure the change in fundamental frequency. The change can be used to measure the environmental factor. Sensor sensitivity and inductive coupling efficiency can be competing design constraints. A driver, electrically connected to the sensor and inductively coupled to the interrogation circuit, can relax the constraints. The driver, however, can introduce noise into the sensor. The sensor can be shielded using physical and geometric techniques to reduce the noise.

The SAW device can condition an interrogation signal before passing it to the BAW sensor. For example, the SAW device can act as an impedance matcher or a frequency shifter. The hybrid sensor can be created by connecting the electrodes of a BAW sensor to a SAW device transducer. The hybrid sensor can be interrogated via any of the common interrogation circuits such as a grid dip oscillator or a RADAR type interrogation system.

Many mechanical systems contain rotating parts used to transfer power from one part of the system to another. The system's efficiency and longevity can be increased by measuring the speed and loading of the rotating parts. Passive wireless sensors are ideal for instrumenting rotating parts because they require no connecting wires and no stored energy. The sensor measurements contain read errors when the stationary interrogation circuit and the rotating sensor are not ideally aligned. The read errors are a function of the angular offset between the stationary interrogation circuit and the passive sensor. As such, the read errors are deterministic. A measurement of the angular offset between the stationary interrogation circuit and the passive sensor is used to determine a correction factor that cancels out the read error to produce a compensated sensor signal.

A passive acoustic wave sensor system for monitoring the quality of liquids, such as engine oil, is disclosed. The sensor system has an acoustic wave sensing device for generating a propagating acoustic wave and for detecting changes in frequency or other propagation characteristics of the acoustic wave caused by acousto-electric interactions between the liquid and the wave at an interactive region of the device. An antenna is integrated in the sensing device for receiving an interrogation signal and for transmitting the output response of the sensing device. The output response can be analyzed to determine the conductivity, pH or other electrical characteristics of the liquid. One or more reference devices may be utilized to compensate for mechanical effects of the liquid and temperature or other environmental effects. The sensing and reference devices can be configured as SH-SAW, SH-APM, FPM devices or other acoustic wave devices.

A heating element can be deposited in association with a plurality of acoustic wave components upon the acoustic wave substrate. The acoustic wave components, the piezoelectric substrate, the heater and the heating element operate in a high-condensation environment, such that the plurality of acoustic wave components are heated directly by the heater and/or the heating element, thereby promoting a desorption of water in the high-condensation environment in order to achieve accurate and reliable flow sensing data thereof.
