When a flag indicating that the aspect ratio of the caption is 16:9 is set, the caption video image frame size (720×480) is converted so as to match the aspect ratio of 16:9 and the caption video obtained as the result is superimposed on the main video and displayed. That is, when the main video has an aspect ratio of 4:3, as shown in FIG. 19, reduction in the lateral direction is performed and the main video is displayed with addition of black tone at the right and left but the caption video is displayed with the aspect ratio of 16:9.
