摘要: A powerline network may comprise powerline communication (PLC) devices of a first class of PLC devices that are incompatible with PLC devices of a second class of PLC devices. This can result in interference between communications of the first and the second classes of PLC devices. A dual mode PLC device that is compatible with the first and the second classes of PLC devices can be implemented for coexistence with both classes of PLC devices. The dual mode PLC device can determine whether the powerline network comprises a combination of PLC devices of the first and the second classes of PLC devices. One of a plurality of packet headers that is compatible with both the classes of PLC devices can be selected for transmission in response to determining that the powerline network comprises a combination of PLC devices of the first and the second classes of PLC devices.

摘要: Information is modulated onto frequency components of a signal. The resulting modulated signal includes at least some redundancy in frequency enabling a portion of the information modulated onto selected frequency components to be recovered from fewer than all of the selected frequency components. Controlling the spectrum of the modulated signal includes enabling the amplitude of at least some frequency components of the modulated signal to be set below a predetermined amplitude used for modulating the information.

摘要: A method for transmitting information in a multi-carrier system includes: identifying a first set of carrier signals, associated with a first code rate; and identifying a second set of carrier signals, associated with a second code rate. The method also includes partitioning a first sequence of bits representing a single symbol into a first group of bits associated with the first code rate and at least a second group of bits associated with the second code rate; interleaving a subset of bits from the first group to map multiple bits from the first group to respective carrier signals in the first set of carrier signals to achieve the first code rate; and interleaving a subset of bits from the second group to map multiple bits from the second group to respective carrier signals in the second set of carrier signals to achieve the second code rate.

摘要: Communicating over a network of communication stations includes monitoring for reception of an electromagnetic wave that has a power above a threshold and a frequency in a predetermined frequency interval, and selecting carrier frequencies for modulating information onto signals transmitted over the network. The carrier frequencies are selected based at least in part on whether an electromagnetic wave having a power above the threshold and a frequency in the frequency interval has been received in a predetermined time interval, and based at least in part on a demand by one or more stations in the network for capacity for communicating over the network.

摘要: A method of operating in a network in which a plurality of stations communicate over a shared medium (e.g., using a carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) service). The stations contend for access to the shared medium using a contention procedure that relies on a priority level, wherein transmissions with a lower priority level have a reduced chance of gaining access to the shared medium during a contention process. Selected stations are given the capability of temporarily promoting the priority level of transmissions they are attempting to make. The priority level is increased during an interval to reduce the chance that other stations gain access to the shared medium during that interval, and the priority level is restored to its normal level following the interval.
