If the customer has forgotten the song title or the singer or other words that provide the identifier, he or she may hum or otherwise vocalize a few bars of the desired composition, or pick the desired composition out on a simulated keyboard. A music-recognition system then locates candidates for the selected composition and displays identifiers for these candidates to the customer.

摘要： A rotary switch which cooperates with a printed circuit board employs a knob member having a handle portion that protrudes through an opening in a panel of an equipment housing. The printed circuit board is spaced beneath the panel and has printed wiring contacts that are disposed along a circular path beneath the knob member. Switches which include the printed wiring contacts are opened and closed when the knob member is rotated. In one embodiment, four pairs of printed wiring contacts are disposed on the PCB at 90.degree. intervals and a spacer sheet having openings positioned at the contact pairs rests on the PCB. A contactor sheet rests on the spacer sheet and supports contactor elements that are positioned to protrude through the openings and bridge the contactor pairs when the appropriate region of the contactor sheet is depressed. Such depression is accomplished by contactor legs extending from a contactor member affixed to the underside of the knob member. A decoder circuit connected to the contact pairs provides output signals corresponding to the angular position of the knob member. Such a rotary switch is particularly useful for setting the time for appliances such electrical clocks or video cassette recorders.

摘要： A display apparatus includes a spatial light modulator, such as a digital micromirror device or an LCD panel, and a lighting unit that illuminates the spatial light modulator. The lighting unit may include red, green, and blue lamps which emit light that impinges on a DMD from at least two different directions. The lamps may be flash tubes which are fired at different binary levels in accordance with the rank of the bits that are being displayed on the DMD. The lamps may be fluorescent lamps which are driven steadily at predetermined levels while the rows of micromirrors are turned on in sequence and subsequently turned off in sequence. Resetting to dislodge micromirrors that have become stuck can be accomplished by emitting current pulses through the micromirrors while exposing them to a magnetic field. The illumination unit may include a lamp unit and a color wheel. The light from the lamp unit can be integrated, and the data displayed on the spatial light modulator can be changed when the integrated light reaches a predetermined value. The color wheel may be rotated faster than the frame repetition rate of video information that is being displayed. The intensity of the light may be controlled in accordance with the bit rank or significance of the bits that are being displayed by the spatial light modulator. Several techniques for achieving different intensity levels are disclosed.

However, to multiply extremely large numbers, each squaring unit may itself have look-up memories and additional components. A divider may be formed by using the multiplier to multiply trial quotients by a divisor and by comparing the product with a dividend. The trial quotient is formed by shifting a one through a sequence of bit positions and latching the one at bit positions such that the trial quotient times the divisor does not exceed the dividend.

摘要： A liquid crystal display unit includes a liquid crystal display panel having a matrix or pixels which act as light valves. The red component of an image is displayed on the panel, and a red light is flashed on the back of the panel. Then the green component of the image is displayed and a green light is flashed, and the blue component is displayed and a blue light is flashed. A plurality of light sources, each having a red light emitter, a green light emitter, and a blue light emitter, may be employed at a close distance to an active-matrix LCD panel if compensation is provided for the differences in light intensity at different positions on the back of the panel. A passive-matrix LCD panel may be used if a flash of light is emitted each time a row electrode of the panel is strobed. Preferably a plurality of light sources is used, and after one row electrode is strobed and its associated light source is fired, the next row electrode to be strobed is located adjacent a different light source. As a result, a row of pixels is exposed to an intense burst of light at the optimum moment and a relatively mild burst of light as the row of pixels is turning OFF.
