Abstract: A reciprocating electrodynamic machine comprises a magnetic circuit in which a substantially constant flux is maintained; A-C energizable windings carried by axially spaced apart stator poles having slots with overhung tooth tips which simultaneously confront the axially spaced apart poles of an axially movable armature across a small air gap, and short-circuited compensating windings on the armature poles. Alternating currents induced in the short-circuited compensating windings substantially cancel the alternating components of flux in the armature poles.

Abstract: A resilient hydrodynamic bearing wherein a resilient bearing insert made up of two separate bearing element members arranged in laminate relationship and anchored together to allow a limited amount of relative movement therebetween is disposed within the spacing defined by the confronting surfaces of the opening in a supporting structure and a shaft or other movable member received within the opening and anchored to the supporting structure to allow for a limited amount of relative movement and operative under dynamic conditions to establish a hydrodynamic fluid film support for the movable member. One bearing element member is disposed adjacent the movable member and presents a surface area thereto and the other bearing element member includes a plurality of spaced-apart resilient surface elevations formed therein which under dynamic conditions are operative to frictionally contact and resiliently support the said one bearing element member and cause it to deflect between adjacent resilient surface elevations to create the load supporting hydrodynamic fluid film.

Abstract: A hybrid boost bearing assembly is described for a rotating shaft member which is rotatably supported on a base member. The hybrid boost bearing assembly comprises a rolling element bearing for rotatably supporting the shaft member on the base member during starts, stops, reverse thrust loadings and under emergency operating conditions, and a fluid film bearing acting singly or coacting with the rolling element bearing for absorbing the loads imposed on the shaft member during all other conditions of operation. A fluid lubricant supply is provided for supplying fluid lubricant to the bearings and means are provided for shifting the loading of the rotating shaft member from the rolling element bearing to the fluid film bearing as the rotating shaft member is brought up to its normal operating speed. The means for shifting the loading from the rolling element bearing to the fluid film bearing comprises the generation of pressure in the fluid film space between the opposed fluid film bearing surfaces, by hydrodynamic action, from an external source of pressure, or by some other means, thereby causing the fluid film bearing to assume a greater share of the load of the rotating shaft as it is brought up to normal operating speed. As a result, the rolling element bearing will assume substantially the full load of the rotating shaft only during starting, stopping, reverse loading periods, and in the event of the failure of the fluid lubricant supply, while the fluid film bearing will absorb the shaft loads under all other conditions of operation. The fluid film bearing may comprise a hydrodynamic bearing for producing a self-acting fluid film, a hydrostatic bearing, or a hybrid hydrodynamic-hydrostatic bearing, and the rolling element bearing may comprise a ball bearing, roller bearing, needle bearing, or the like. In certain arrangements a preloading spring is provided for preloading the rolling element bearing a predetermined amount so that the rolling element bearing assumes a predetermined proportionate share of the loading on the rotating shaft under certain operating conditions. In other arrangements, a retractable bearing piston portion which moves towards and retracts from an opposed, load-sustaining bearing surface is employed to cause the fluid film bearing to assume the load from the rolling element bearing. In other arrangements, a spherically-shaped self-aligning seat is provided which coacts with a complementary-shaped seating surface to accommodate misalignment in the rotating shaft supported by the bearing assembly.

Abstract: A self-acting combination clamping and bearing system is provided which comprises two members having confronting bearing surfaces, one of which is a bearing surface of suitable elastomeric material. The confronting surfaces of the two members are arranged in self-opposed relationship to constrain relative movement of the members. Passages are provided for the supply of fluid lubricant under pressure to the interface of the confronting surfaces. The lubricant pressure deforms the surface of the elastomeric member and forms a bearing profile so that the members are thereafter supported for relative movement on a load supporting film of fluid lubricant. There is also disclosed a particular application of the invention in which the combination clamping and bearing system is used to support the two-degrees-of-freedom rotor on the shaft of a directional gyroscope of an assault weapon.

Abstract: A linear reciprocating electric motor of the type wherein a moving member is arranged to reciprocate within an opening in a stationary member which constitutes the electromagnetic circuit thereof, is provided with a pair of identical balancing coils arranged on the stationary member on opposite sides of the moving member and connected in series-bucking relationship so that the balancing coils are operative to maintain equality of fluxes on both sides of the moving member to prevent side pull thereon.
