Abstract: Disclosed is a method for diagnosing a neurodegenerative disease in a subject. The method comprises obtaining from the subject a sample comprising at least one live blood cell, and optionally isolating at least one live blood cell from the sample. The method further comprises generating one or more multispectral or hyperspectral images of the at least one cell, and analysing spectral characteristics of autofluorescence from the at least one cell. Also disclosed is a system configured to aid in the detection or diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease. Also disclosed is a method for selecting a subject for treatment for a neurodegenerative disease. Also disclosed is a method for monitoring the response of a subject to a therapeutic treatment for a neurodegenerative disease. Also disclosed is a protocol for monitoring the efficacy of a therapeutic treatment for a neurodegenerative disease.

Abstract: An apparatus includes an outer structure body having an inner surface defining a cavity and an inner structure body rotatably supported within the cavity. The inner structure body has an outer surface in opposing relation to the inner surface and a central bore. Movable elements are positioned along the inner surface and movably coupled to the outer structure body. Ball elements are positioned along the outer surface and coupled to the inner structure body for movement with the inner structure body. The ball elements releasably contact the movable elements and impart motion to the movable elements in response to relative motion between the inner structure body and the outer structure body. Energy harvesters are positioned to generate electrical charges based on piezoelectric effect or magnetostrictive effect when motion is imparted to the movable elements by the ball elements.

Abstract: A system includes sensing modules positioned along a length of a drill string. Each sensing module includes a structure arrangement composed of an outer structure body having a cavity and an inner structure body rotatably supported within the cavity. The structure arrangement is coupled to the drill string such that rotation of the drill string produces a relative rotation between the structure bodies. Ball elements are disposed in a gap between the structure bodies and move along a predetermined path defined in the gap in response to relative rotation between the structure bodies. Movable elements are positioned to physically interact with the ball elements as the ball elements move along the predetermined path. Energy harvesters in the sensor modules generate electrical energy from the mechanical energy produced by physical interaction between the ball elements and movable elements. The sensing modules include sensors to measure parameters in the drill string environment.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of treating or preventing a neurological condition mediated by a tau-dependent signalling complex in neurons of a subject, comprising treating the subject to: (a) promote phosphorylation of one or more amino acids residues of tau, wherein the phosphorylation of the amino acid residues causes disruption of the tau-dependent signalling complex in neurons of the subject; or (b) introduce a variant of tau that causes disruption of the tau-dependent signalling complex in neurons of the subject. The invention also relates to vectors, compositions and kits for treating or preventing a neurological condition mediated by a tau-dependent signalling complex in neurons of a subject.

Also disclosed herein are methods for detecting installation of an optical tap and methods for securing an optical signal in an optical fiber.

The at least one nonlinear interaction comprises at least one Raman interaction. The Stokes light beam (22) has a spatial beam quality that is greater than that of the input light (12). The system (10) comprises a light extractor (18) arranged to generate the output light beam (14) by extracting at least some of the Stokes light beam (22) from the optical resonator.
