In some embodiments, an improved method of encoding/decoding of enhancement layer pictures is introduced to enable encoding an area within an enhancement layer picture with increased quality and/or spatial resolution and with high coding efficiency. Enhancement layer sub-pictures have a size smaller than the corresponding enhancement layer pictures. They are coded with respect to the previously coded base-layer pictures or enhancement layer pictures. The enhancement information could be in the form of: increasing the fidelity of the chroma; increasing the bit-depth; increasing the quality of a region; or increasing the spatial resolution of a region.

The method comprises receiving a first sequence of pictures from a first view; and receiving a second sequence of pictures from a second view. The first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures are divided into a first period of pictures and a second period of pictures, wherein no picture in the second period of pictures precedes any picture in the first period of pictures in output order. At least a third sequence of pictures is obtained of at least one view between the first view and the second view covering the first period of pictures. Said at least the third sequence of pictures and a first set of pictures of the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures that belong to the second period of pictures are encoded.

The invention relates to coding of depth information for multi-view video coding. Different parameters and/or any features from picture encoding or the encoded and reconstructed pictures may be used in the coding of the depth information, especially in filtering the depth picture using e.g. a loop filter in the depth coding loop. The same principle may be applied in decoding, that is, the decoded (texture) pictures and parameters may be used to control the decoding of the depth data, e.g. to control the filtering of the depth data in a loop filter. Parameters and data that may be used as such control may comprise features extracted from the reconstructed pictures, the encoded video data and parameters, the motion estimation data and others.
