摘要: A condenser, particularly for use with fermenting vessels, to condense liquid out of a moisture-carrying gas. An upper wall having a gaseous phase discharge defines part of an enclosure to receive a moisture-carrying gas from which the liquid phase is to be condensed. A lower wall is situated beneath the upper wall, also defines part of the enclosure, and serves not only to admit the moisture carrying gas to the enclosure but also to discharge the liquid condensate out of the enclosure. A side wall extends between the upper and lower walls and defines the enclosure therewith. A tube within the enclosure receives a coolant and defines the path of flow of the coolant within the enclosure. A mass transfer packing is situated within the enclosure in engagement with the walls and also surrounding and engaging the tube so that heat transfer can take place between the packing and the tube as well as between fluids within the enclosure and the packing. This mass transfer packing is made up of a plurality of ceramic bodies of special configuration which act in a very effective manner to condense the liquid phase while assuring low pressure drop, a large exposed surface area, turbulence, and good internal liquid distribution.

摘要: A device for sensing and controlling optical density of a fluid. The device includes a pair of tube portions of different crosssectional areas through which the fluid flows, these tube portions having walls which are transparent and which are of equal optical characteristics. A light source is provided on one side of the tube portions for directing light transversely through the fluid which flows through the tube portions, and on the other side of the tube portions there are a pair of photocells which respetively receive the light, so that one of the photocells receives light which travels through the tube portion of larger cross-sectional area with a longer path of travel through the fluid than the light received by the other of the photocells. As the optical density of the fluid increases the differential in the light received by the photocells will also increase, and this differential can be detected for achieving desired controls. The light which reaches the photocell receiving the light which has travelled through the tube portion of smaller cross-sectional area is maintained at a constant intensity by an adjacent third photocell.

摘要: A liquid-sampling structure located at the bottom of a vessel which contains the liquid from which samples are to be taken. A valve is located at the bottom end of the vessel and has a closed position closing the vessel and an open position providing a passage through which a sample of the liquid in the vessel can flow, a suitable supporting structure being located beneath the valve for supporting a test tube which receives the sample. A valve actuator is operatively connected with the valve to displace between its closed and open positions. A structure is operatively connected with the valve to form a fluid passage through which a cleaning fluid can be directed through the valve when it is in its closed position so as to clean the valve with a cleaning fluid while the valve is in its closed position. An additional fluid passage is provided for providing a path for a cleaning fluid in order to clean the interior of the structure which supports a test tube beneath the valve.

摘要: A positive displacement pump capable of pumping liquids in which solids are suspended. The pump has a pump housing provided in its interior with a pump chamber which expands during each suction stroke and contracts during each pressure stroke. A housing wall defines part of the pumping chamber and is formed with inlet and outlet ports through which the pump material flows. A valve body oscillates with respect to the latter housing wall for opening and closing each of the ports in the sequence required to achieve the pumping action. A surface of the housing wall at the ports thereof slidably engages the oscillating valve body so that the latter achieves a shearing action to facilitate pumping of liquids in which solids are suspended.

摘要: An incubator shaker apparatus in which objects are shaken by rotary or reciprocating action within a bath with the drive means being external of movable means within the bath and with the movable means being drivingly connected to the external drive means through magnetic elements to eliminate a physical driving connection between the movable means and the external drive means. The invention also provides for improved means for controlling the level of the bath.
