Abstract: Water removal from humidified air and other water-laden gases may be complicated due to the need for large and expensive capital equipment or use of powder-form desiccants that may lead to pressure drops, poor throughput and energy-intensive recovery of water. Reversible water-absorbing constructs may alleviate these difficulties and comprise: a phase change polymer exhibiting a reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic phase transition, and at least one additional material in contact with the phase change polymer, such as a water-sorptive material. The phase change polymer and the at least one additional material are formed as a plurality of filaments. Filaments formed from the phase change polymer may be generated through an electrospinning process, which may be arranged in various higher level constructs, such as in fibers, fabrics and non-woven filament mats capable of absorbing water from humidified air or other water-laden gases.

Abstract: An electrodialysis apparatus comprises a first reservoir wherein salt dissolved in solvent is reduced below a threshold concentration and a second reservoir wherein the salt concentration increases. A first electrode contacts a first solution of a first redox-active electrolyte material, and a second electrode contacts a second solution of a second redox-active electrolyte material. A first type of membrane is disposed between the first and second reservoirs and a second type of membrane is disposed between the first electrode and the first reservoir and between the second electrode and the second reservoir. A color measuring device is coupled to at least one of the solutions, and a control system is configured to modify the value of a property of at least one of the first and second solutions in response to detecting a color value of one of the solutions exceeding a threshold color value.

Abstract: A system is provided which mixes static scene and live annotations for labeled dataset collection. A first recording device obtains a 3D mesh of a scene with physical objects. The system displays, on the first recording device while in the second mode, the 3D mesh including a first projection indicating a 2D bounding area corresponding to the marked first annotations. Abstract: An electronic memory is configured to store pre-recorded neurostimulation data comprising patterns of stimulation of a specified region of a subject's brain developed to recreate a response by one or more of a sensing organ or sensing organs, a vestibular system, and a memory of the subject. A focused ultrasound transducer arrangement is operably coupled to the electronic memory and comprises an array of ultrasound transducers. The focused ultrasound transducer arrangement is configured to deliver transcranial stimulation to the specified region of a person's brain using the pre-recorded neurostimulation data to recreate the response by one or more of the sensing organ or sensing organs, the vestibular system, and the memory of the subject. A support structure is configured for placement on or about a person's head. The support structure is configured to support at least the focused ultrasound transducer arrangement.

Abstract: A neuromodulator includes an electromagnetic (EM) wave generator configured to generate EM waves remote from a patient and to direct the EM waves to one or more target regions within the patient. Frequencies of the EM waves fall outside a range of frequencies that activates neurons. Intersection of the EM waves in each target region creates envelope-modulated electric and magnetic fields having one or more frequencies that fall within the range of frequencies that activates neurons. The neuromodulator includes control circuitry configured to control parameters of the EM waves produced by the EM wave generator. The neuromodulator may use feedback based on one or more of patient input and/or sensing of physiological signals in order to close the loop and control the EM waves.

Abstract: An innovative method to automatically place sensors and stimuli-sensitive active actuators to neutralize the effects of structural faults and design a smart fault-resilient system is described. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed framework is the first systematic integration of thermally activated shape memory polymer actuators with a sensor distribution framework targeted to bring a damaged structural system to its native state. The framework does not explicitly model the material constitutive model and hence can be applied to linear and nonlinear material behaviors. The approach enables the design of resilient smart structures that can be additively manufactured. The framework computes a matrix of relative importance for different sensor positions and uses that to optimally place actuators to reconfigure the system in presence of faults.

Abstract: A system determines that an asset of an engineering system has transitioned from a quasi-steady degradation stage to an accelerated degradation phase based on sensor measurements received from an asset. During the accelerated degradation phase, features are extracted from the sensor measurements that are indicative of wear of the asset. A conformal mathematical filter is applied to the features that causes the features to conform to a wear curve formulation associated with the asset. An output of the filter is resampled to form a noise-reduced signal. The noise-reduced signal is input into a sequence machine learning model. A loss function of the sequence machine learning model uses an increased penalty to overprediction and a relaxed penalty for underprediction. An output of the sequence machine learning model is used to predict a remaining useful life (RUL) of the asset.

Abstract: One embodiment provides a method and a system for computing diagnoses for a physical system. During operation, the system can obtain a design of the physical system, generate a design of a diagnostic system by augmenting the design of the physical system based on a number of fault-emulating subsystems, and convert the design of the diagnostic system into a polynomial formula comprising a plurality of variables. The plurality of variables can include inputs and outputs of the original physical system and a number of ancillary variables. The system can further embed the polynomial formula on a hardware-based solver configured to perform optimization using the polynomial formula as an objective function to obtain a diagnostic vector used for explaining faults in the physical system.
