    Abstract: An apparatus includes a photonic integrated circuit, which includes at least one splitter configured to split at least one input beam into multiple input beamlets and multiple phase modulators configured to phase-shift at least some of the input beamlets. The apparatus also includes an array of optical amplifiers configured to amplify the phase-shifted input beamlets and generate amplified beamlets. The apparatus further incudes a beam combiner configured to combine the amplified beamlets and generate an output beam. In addition, the apparatus includes a controller configured to control the phase modulators in order to adjust phasing of the phase-shifted input beamlets.

    Abstract: Vibration compensation is provided for Interferometric Noise Suppressed Oscillators (INSOs). In an INSO the error signal at the mixer output responds linearly to changes in carrier frequency. A vibration compensation signal is summed with the error signal at the input to the feedback amplifier to provide the control signal to the loop phase shifter to suppress close-in phase noise near the carrier frequency and to reduce the effects of mechanical vibrations on oscillator phase noise. The addition of the vibration compensation signal does degrade carrier suppression, hence increases the flicker noise contributed by the INSO's LNA but does so without degrading overall oscillator phase noise. In a frequency tuned configuration, the vibration compensation signal reduces the effects of mechanical vibrations on oscillator phase noise independent of the tuning voltage applied to the phase shifter.

    Abstract: An apparatus includes a Dewar having an endcap. The apparatus also includes a heat sink and a thermal interface material configured to thermally couple the endcap of the Dewar to the heat sink. The thermal interface material includes an amorphous pliable material that is configured to transfer thermal energy between the endcap of the Dewar and the heat sink without structurally coupling the Dewar to the heat sink. A thermal shoe may be positioned between the thermal interface material and the heat sink, and the thermal shoe may be configured to hold the thermal interface material against the endcap. The thermal shoe may have (i) a smaller cross-sectional size in a portion of the thermal shoe contacting the thermal interface material and (ii) a larger cross-sectional size in a portion of the thermal shoe contacting the heat sink.

    Abstract: A system includes a first dataset of vehicle trajectories including individual vehicle tracks forming a first track density, a desired vehicle track density profile, a spatio-temporal coverage metric, and a track model including Heaviside functions encoding track time origins and durations for the individual vehicle tracks and including locations for the plurality of individual vehicle tracks. Approximations of the Heaviside functions are minimized as a function of the spatio-temporal coverage metric. The first dataset of vehicle trajectories is manipulated to satisfy the desired vehicle track density profile through minimizing an approximation of the Heaviside functions. Each individual vehicle track in the first dataset of vehicle trajectories is shifted as a result of the optimization, thereby generating a second dataset of vehicle trajectories having a second track density.

    Abstract: A system and method of tracking a hypersonic object over a flightpath includes at least one observer having at least one sensor. The sensor is configured to provide measurements of the hypersonic object that are geometrically diverse such that each observer may independently measure any combination of range, angles, Doppler, and angle rates. The observers transmit measurements to a processing unit as the hypersonic object undergoes three phases including a boost phase, a ballistic phase, and a hypersonic glide phase. The hypersonic object is tracked over many time steps by first selecting a dynamics model representative of expected object kinematics during said phase. Then, an unscented Kalman filter is used to predict a future state and a covariance using the dynamics model that was selected. Finally, the unscented Kalman filter updates the future state and covariance that were predicted based on the geometrically diverse measurements of the sensors.

    Abstract: A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) includes a hollow cylindrical stator with stator windings and a magnetic rotor having M pole pairs arranged to rotate around a rotational axis in the stator by a rotor shaft. The stator windings are energized to generate a magnetic rotational field in dependence upon the rotational position of the magnetic rotor. Two or more analog magnetic flux sensors are positioned within the hollow cylindrical stator and arranged concentrically with respect to the rotational axis around the stator at a constant mechanical angle equal to a constant electrical angle divided by M relative to each other. The magnetic flux sensors are spaced directly from the magnetic rotor by a radial gap (X) in such a way that the magnetic flux of the magnetic rotor impinges on the analog magnetic flux sensors without obstruction to output two or more sinusoidal signals with phases separated by the constant electrical angle that can be evaluated to determine the rotational position of the magnetic rotor. Sensor integration eliminates the additional sense magnet, Hall sensors and CCA positioned external to the motor housing to provide a smaller motor package at lower cost. Integration also facilitates the use of the PMSM in high-temperature or high-shock (high g) environments such as gun-launched guided projectiles or hypersonic missiles.

    Abstract: A system includes multiple electrical nodes connected in series to a primary power source via transmission lines. Each node includes a power converter that can receive first power from the primary power source or another upstream node. The power converter can change a voltage level and/or a frequency of the first power. Each node also includes a high-speed synchronous rotating machine (HSRM), which includes an inertial storage flywheel, a rotating excitation assembly, stator windings, and a synchronous motor coupled to an induction generator. The HSRM can boost a voltage level between an input and output to compensate for a voltage drop of the first power. At least one of the nodes further includes an inductive power coupler to electrically couple the node to a mobile power source that provides second power to the node and receives a portion of the first power from the node using contactless inductive power transfer. The system includes a combination of AC and DC power transmission techniques and associated bidirectional power converters.
