A process for preparing an electronically-conductive thermoplastic composition having at least two phases, which includes (A) combining an amorphous or semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer or miscible blend of polymers with an electronically-conductive carbon under conditions sufficient to disperse the conductive carbon, thereby forming a mixture having at least one phase, with at least 60 percent of the carbon dispersed in a first phase which comprises at least 90 percent by weight of the mixture; and (B) combining the mixture obtained from step (A) with an amorphous or semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer or miscible blend of polymers, at least a portion of which is immiscible in the first phase, thereby forming a composition having at least two phases. Compositions prepared by this process are sufficiently conductive to be useful for a variety of applications, such as structural materials for applications requiring electromotively-paintable substrates.

Stable aqueous dispersions or emulsions can be prepared by merging into a mechanical disperser a stream of a molten or liquid disperse phase with a stream of a molten or liquid continuous phase to form a dispersion or emulsion. The molten or liquid disperse phase stream contains a polymer that is preferably a solid at room temperature, but molten at some advanced temperature. The polymer is formed in a molten state or formed and melted by a continuous reaction process such as an extrusion process, including melt extrusion or compound extrusion. It has been discovered that low polydisperse submicron sized dispersion can be prepared by the method of the present invention.

This invention relates a composition useful for preparing a polyvinylidene fluoride polymer membrane containing (1) a polyvinylidene fluoride polymer, (2) glycerol monoacetate, glycerol diacetate, glycerol triacetate, or mixtures thereof, and (3) optionally glycerol, wherein the polyvinylidene fluoride polymer membrane prepared from the composition is useful for a membrane liquid separation process such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, dialysis, or membrane stripping. In another aspect, this invention is an improved process for using the composition to prepare a polyvinylidene fluoride polymer membrane by forming a mixture of the composition, heating the mixture to a temperature at which the mixture becomes a homogeneous fluid, and extruding, molding, or casting the homogeneous fluid into a membrane. Another aspect of this invention relates to a polyvinylidene fluoride polymer membrane where the fabricated membrane contains glycerol monoacetate, glycerol diacetate, glycerol triacetate, or mixtures thereof, and optionally glycerol.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of an article comprising a polymer itself comprising poly(etheretherketone), which process comprises:A. contacting poly(etheretherketone) with at least one organic compound, consisting essentially of carbon and hydrogen, and optionally oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, halogen, or mixtures thereof having a molecular weight of between about 160 and 450 daltons and having at least one six membered aromatic ring structure, which compound is stable at a temperature of between 240.degree. and 400.degree. C. at ambient pressure, at a temperature of between about 240.degree. and 400.degree. C. at ambient pressure for a time effective to dissolve greater than about 10 percent by weight of the poly(etheretherketone) present;B. forming the solution of poly(etheretherketone) and solvent of step (A) into a desired article configuration;C. removing the solvent; andD. recovering the article comprising poly(etheretherketone) formed thereby. PEEK is a useful material for articles needing high temperature and solvent resistant properties. PEEK is also useful in the formation of membranes, hollow fibers and solid fibers which are porous, permeable, semipermeable or selectively permeable.
