摘要: An extension-type spark plug includes an upper terminal stud and a lower terminal stud axially spaced from one another in electrical communication with one another. An upper tubular insulator having a through cavity surrounds at least a portion of the upper terminal stud. A lower insulator constructed of a separate piece of material from the upper insulator has a through cavity surrounding at least a portion of the lower terminal stud. A spring member is disposed between the upper terminal stud and the lower terminal stud and biases the upper terminal stud and the lower member away from one another. The spring member allows the upper terminal stud to move axially under an externally applied force sufficient to overcome the bias imparted by the spring member and maintains electrical communication between said upper terminal stud and said lower terminal stud.

摘要: A spark plug for igniting gases in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The spark plug has a center electrode, an insulator, a one-piece shell, and a terminal. The center electrode is in communication with an energy source. The insulator surrounds the center electrode. The one-piece shell surrounds and contacts the insulator for securing the insulator within the shell, wherein the shell has a plurality of threads near a first end and a ground electrode attached to the shell and aligned with a tip of the center electrode at a second end to define a spark gap. Further, a seat is formed in the shell between the plurality of threads and the ground electrode for sealing the shell against the engine. The terminal has a first end in communication with the center electrode and a second end which has a connector portion for connecting to the energy source.

摘要: A spark plug assembly (10) for engine applications where the combustion chamber is difficult to access when servicing or replacing a spark plug. The spark plug assembly (10) includes a fairly traditional spark plug component (28) to which an elongated tubular conduit (12) is attached, such as by welding, to a portion of the metallic shell (32). The conduit (12) contains an upper ceramic insulator (52) adjacent its top end (14) disposed in end-to-end abutting contact with an outer elastomeric insulator (58). The ceramic insulator of the spark plug component (28), herein referred to as a lower ceramic insulator (30), is surrounded by the outer elastomeric insulator (58) and held securely within the conduit (12) thereby. An inner elastomeric insulator (62) is disposed in a continuous passageway formed between aligned central bores formed in the respective upper ceramic (52) and outer elastomeric (58) insulators. The inner elastomeric insulator (62) supports and further electrically isolates an elongated electrically conductive center electrode extension (48) that is in direct electrical conductivity with the center electrode (44) of the spark plug component (28). An ignition lead wire makes electrical contact with the center electrode extension (48) and thereby delivers electrical energy at timed intervals to the spark gap.

摘要: Switch-controlled apparatus for actuating a power switch to enable application of power from an associated power supply to a heater filament of a glow plug in a diesel engine is disclosed. The filament is one which is heated to a predetermined design temperature when a specified voltage is applied thereto. The power source has a supply voltage greater than the specified voltage of the filament. A switch accessible to an operator of the engine is operable in a first position to prevent the application of the supply voltage to the apparatus, operable in a second position to apply the supply voltage through a first terminal of the apparatus, and operable in a third position to apply the supply voltage through the first terminal and through a second terminal of the apparatus and to a starter for the engine. The apparatus comprises means operable, after the switch has been turned from the first to the second position, to actuate the power switch for a preheat time period which varies as an inverse function of available supply voltage and equals the time required to raise the temperature of the filament from ambient temperature to the design temperature. The apparatus also includes means operable, after the preheat time period, to alternately actuate and then deactuate the power switch in a cyclic fashion to maintain the design temperature of the filament for a prestart time period. The apparatus also includes means operable, after turning the switch from the second to the third position, to continue the cyclical actuation and deactuation of the power switch for an afterglow time period predetermined by the amount of time required for smooth engine idling and to minimize engine noise and white smoke emission.

摘要: An improved high voltage pulse power supply for a spark plug test fixture. AC line voltage is applied through a voltage step-down transformer, a half wave rectifier and an electronic switch to the primary winding of a conventional ignition coil. During the rise time of positive half cycles, the rectified voltage is applied through the electronic switch to the ignition coil primary. As the positive half cycle begins to fall towards the zero crossover, the electronic switch is opened. The magnetic field collapse in the ignition coil produces a high voltage negative pulse which is applied to a spark plug under test. The peak voltage of the negative pulse is adjusted by controlling the peak current in the ignition coil primary.
