The present invention is a method and apparatus for improving the performance of spatial temporal turbo channel coding (STTCC) used in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems called eigen-STTCC (E-STTCC) that employs eigen-beamforming to make use of orthogonal eigen streams in the MIMO channel. Singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to the channel matrix producing a linear precoding matrix containing the orthonormal basis for the eigen streams. In a first embodiment, the turbo encoded codeword containing concatenated systematic and parity bits is precoded with the linear precoding matrix such that the systematic bits are transmitted over the eigen streams with highest power. In a second embodiment, the codeword is made up of interleaved systematic bits and parity bits prior to eigen beamform preceding, effectively interleaving the systematic and data bits spatially over the eigen streams. In an alternate embodiment, the data stream is interleaved at the input to the encoder.

A method and system for implementing multi-user virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques for wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) having one or more antennas are disclosed. The system includes a base station and at least one WTRU having at least two antennas. The number of antennas of the base station is not less than the number of antennas of any of the WTRUs. The base station generates a channel matrix for the WTRUs and processes received signals from the WTRUs based on a measurement of the channel matrix. The WTRUs may perform transmit precoding or eigen-beamforming using the channel matrix information. The WTRUs may also perform transmit diversity.

A method and apparatus may be used for supporting multiple hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) processes per transmission time interval (TTI). A transmitter and a receiver may include a plurality of H-ARQ processes. Each H-ARQ process may transmit and receive one TB per TTI. The transmitter may generate a plurality of TBs and assign each TB to a H-ARQ process. The transmitter may send control information for each TB, which may include H-ARQ information associated TBs with the TBs. The transmitter may send the TBs using the associated H-ARQ processes simultaneously per TTI. After receiving the TBs, the receiver may send feedback for each of the H-ARQ processes and associated TBs indicating successful or unsuccessful receipt of each of the TBs to the transmitter. The feedback for multiple TBs may be combined for the simultaneously transmitted H-ARQ processes, (i.e., TBs).

The present invention is related to a method and system for transmit power control in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system. Both a transmitter and a receiver comprise multiple antennae for transmission and reception. The transmitter comprises a power allocation unit for controlling transmit power based on a feedback received from the receiver. The receiver comprises a channel estimator and a singular value decomposition (SVD) unit. The channel estimator generates a channel matrix from a signal received from the transmitter and the SVD unit decomposes the channel matrix into D, U and V matrices. The receiver sends a feedback generated based on output from the SVD unit to the transmitter for controlling the transmit power. The feedback may be one of an eigenvalue, a transmit power level or a power control bit or command. A hybrid scheme for selecting one of them based on channel condition may be implemented.

A method and apparatus for channel coding and rate matching of the Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH) and the Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) is disclosed that uses convolutional encoding to code the control channels. Rate matching is performed using a circular buffer based rate matching algorithm. A rate matching module may contain a single interleaver or may alternatively comprise a plurality of sub-block interleavers. Interleaved coded bits may be stored in the circular buffer in an interlaced format, or output streams from separate sub-block interleavers may be stored contiguously. When a plurality of sub-block interleavers are used, different interleaving patterns may be used. Rate matching may use bit puncturing or repetition to match the rate of the available physical channel resource. Rate matched output bits may be interleaved using a channel interleaver.

A wireless communication apparatus which uses fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver which incorporates a beam space antenna array. The beam space antenna array may be implemented with a Butler matrix array. The beam space antenna array may be a circular array, vertical array, or a combination of both circular and vertical arrays, for providing the desired angular antenna coverage. In one embodiment, the antenna array is optimized because the FFTs are linear invariant transform operators, whereby the order of operations in the OFDM receiver can be interchanged.
