In some embodiments channels (e.g., substantially cylindrically-shaped pores) are formed in a glassy carbon substrate, whereas in other embodiments, ridges are formed that extend along and over a glassy carbon substrate. In either case, a semiconductor and/or metal oxide may be deposited over the glassy carbon to form a composite material.
