摘要： In response to a request from a playback apparatus over a network to play back content, a first recording/playback apparatus transmits data indicating content satisfying the request to the playback apparatus over the network. When selecting desired content from the transmitted data, the playback apparatus requests the first recording/playback apparatus to transmit data of the selected content to the playback apparatus over the network. When the data of the desired content is transmitted to the playback apparatus from the first recording/playback apparatus over the network in response to the request, the content being transmitted is played back via streaming. When the playback apparatus transmits data indicating the played back content and an address of a second recording/playback apparatus to the first recording/playback apparatus over the network, the first recording/playback apparatus transmits data of the played back content to the second recording/playback apparatus over the network in accordance with the address.

The interface transmits information about the one of the plurality of characteristic words to a recording and playback apparatus upon the selection. Further, the interface receives television program information about one of the television programs from the recording and playback apparatus in response to the information about the one of the plurality of characteristic words.

摘要： A content usage system includes a recording and playback device and a portable electronic device mutually connected via a network. When the recording and playback device receives a certain command while outputting digital content, that content is converted into transfer content suitable for use with the portable electronic device, and then stored with metadata indicating that the content is transfer content. Using the metadata, the recording and playback device is able to generate and transmit a list of transfer content upon request from the portable electronic device. Using the list, the user of the portable electronic device then selects desired transfer content from the list and sends a transfer content request. In response, the recording and playback device transmits the selected transfer content to the portable electronic device, thereby making the content available for use on the portable electronic device.

摘要： A DSV control bit determining/inserting unit 11 inserts DSV control bits for execution of DSV control into an input data string and outputs the data string including the DSV control bits to a modulation unit 12. The modulation unit 12 converts the data string with a basic data length of 2 bits into variable length code with a basic code length of 3 bits in accordance with a conversion table and outputs the code resulting from the conversion to a NRZI encoding unit 13. The conversion table used by the modulation unit 12 includes substitution codes for limiting the number of consecutive appearances of a minimum run to a predetermined value and substitution codes for keeping a run length limit. In addition, the conversion table enforces a conversion rule, according to which the remainder of division of the “1” count of an element in a data string by 2 having a value of 0 or 1 shall always be equal to the remainder of division of the “1” count of an element in the code resulting from conversion of the data string by 2.
