    摘要: A method of implanting a spinal prosthesis comprises inserting a first member between superior and inferior spinous processes associated with respective superior and inferior vertebrae. The superior and inferior vertebrae are separated by an intermediate vertebra. The method further includes inserting a second member through a channel in the first member. After the second member is inserted, the method requires removing the second member from the channel and inserting a third member through the channel. The third member has a different stiffness than the second member. Finally, the method requires anchoring the third member to the intermediate vertebra, while the third member is inserted through the channel. The third member is anchored at first and second locations disposed on respective first and second lateral sides of the intermediate vertebra.

The locking device includes a seating member and a posted member. The seating member is operatively associated with the coupling mechanism for securing the stabilization member within the coupling mechanism, and is configured with an opening therein. The posted member, which includes an interface member and a post extending therefrom, is configured for disposition between the seating member and the stabilization member with the post extending therefrom being received into the opening in the seating member when the seating member is employed to secure the stabilization member within the coupling mechanism. The post is sized to engage and facilitate control of the stabilization member as the seating member operatively engages the coupling mechanism.

    摘要: An implant for insertion between vertebral bodies in a patient includes a flexible tether that is coupled between fasteners attached to the vertebral bodies. An energy storing device may be coupled to the tether to convert extension forces between the vertebral bodies into potential energy. The energy storing device may reduce defects at the interface between the fasteners and the vertebral bodies. Various embodiments are provided, including energy storing devices implemented as springs, leaf springs, coiled wire, and corrugated shapes. The energy storing device may be preloaded between the vertebral bodies to further reduce shock from sudden extensions. The energy storing device may be secured to the tether before or after the tether is secured to the fasteners. Further, the energy storing device may be sized to allow the tether and energy storing device to pass laterally through a fastener opening.

    摘要: A surgical instrument for shaping a patient's bone tissue at the joint to receive an implant includes a cutting block body that is sized and shaped to fit a patient's long bone at the joint during joint replacement surgery. The block is attachable to the patient's bone tissue at the joint area. A flat cutting guide surface on the block body is provided for guiding a surgeon's saw blade when the surgeon cuts bone tissue at the joint. A saw capture removably attaches to the block body at or near the flat cutting guide surface. The saw capture also provides a flat cutting guide surface thereon that is positioned generally parallel to the cutting guide surface on the block body during use, a gap being formed therebetween. Wedge locking connections are provided for affixing the saw capture to the block body at the flat cutting guide surface. The connection includes first and second interlocking connecting portions that are respectively on the block body and saw capture. The saw capture is gradually wedged against the block body upon assembly of the block body and the saw capture so that the flat cutting guide surface of the saw capture and the flat cutting guide surface of the block body gradually approach one another upon such assembly.

In one embodiment, the release mechanism is constructed to be positioned between a locked position and a release position. In the locked position, the release mechanism is attached to the tether to prevent the tether from moving through the release mechanism. The release mechanism may be constructed to move between the release and locked positions after being implanted within a patient. In one embodiment, the release mechanism returns to the locked position after the tension on the tether has been reduced below a predetermined amount.

The tethering systems may include an elongated member with first and second sections. The sections are displaceable relative to each other to increase a length of the elongated member. The first section may be attached to a first vertebral member, and a second section may be attached to a second vertebral member. At least one tether may be attached to the elongated member. The tether may include a length to be attached to the first and second sections, and to a third vertebral member that is positioned between and laterally offset from the first and second vertebral members. The length of the elongated member may increase thus causing the tether to apply a corrective force to the third vertebral member.
