Abstract:
Permanent markings are formed on an elastomeric toothed belt for alignment of the drive system in which the belt is to be used by the application of strips of colored elastomeric material transversely across the belt in predetermined relationship with the belt teeth or gaps prior to the curing of the belt. The colored material enters into a firm bond with the elastomer of the belt upon curing.
Abstract:
Belted pneumatic tires characterized by improved treadreinforcing breaker constructions are disclosed. In any such breaker, a single-section plural-layer non-metallic textile cord ply structure having the cords thereof oriented at a 0* angle to the median equatorial plane of the tire is combined with a plural-layer ply structure of metallic wires or strips which in each layer are crossed relative to those in the other layer and are oriented at a substantial bias angle, preferably between about 18* and 75*, to the said plane. The plural-layer textile cord ply structure, which may be located radially outwardly or inwardly of the metal ply structure or between the layers thereof, is constituted by a single length of breaker cord fabric wound in a continuous spiral circumferentially of the carcass for at least a plurality of full turns and is considerably narrower than the metal ply structure. Such tires are found to be possessed of good road-holding or cornering ability while affording good riding comfort. This abstract is not to be taken either as a complete exposition or as a limitation of the present invention, however, the full nature and extent of the invention being discernible only by reference to and from the entire disclosure.

OF, BUT SPACED FROM, THE SUPPORTING SURFACE, WHEREAFTER THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE CUT SHEET MATERIAL IS APPLIED TO THE SUPPORTING SURFACE.
APPARATUS FOR APPLYING A LAYER OF SHEET MATERIAL TO A SUPPORTING SURFACE. THE APPARATUS APPLIES THE LEADING EDGE OF THE SHEET MATERIAL TO THE SUPPORTING SURFACE, ROTATES THE SUPPORTING SURFACE A PREDETERMINED ANGULAS AMOUNT TO APPLY TRAILING PORTIONS OF THE SHEET MATERIAL TO A PREDETERMINED ANGULAR PORTION OF THE SUPPORTING SURFACE, PRESSES THE SHEET MATERIAL ONTO THE ROTATING SUPPORTING SURFACE, AND CUTS THE SHEET MATERIAL IN THE REGION
Abstract:
A TIRE BUILDING MACHINE HAVING A PAIR OF SUPPLY MECHANISMS FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY SUPPLYING A PAIR OF CONTINUOUS STRIPS OF BREAKER MATERIAL OF THE SAME OR DIFFERENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, A PAIR OF SEVERING DECIVES WHICH SEVER THE STRIP INTO STRIP PORTIONS, A PAIR OF TRANSFER MECHANISMS FOR TRANSPORTING THE SEVERED STRIP PORTIONS, RESPECTIVELY, TO A PAIR OF SPACED LOCATIONS, AND A SINGLE BREAKER BUILDING DRUM WHICH IS INTERMITTENTLY SHIFTABLE ALONG A FIXED AXIS BETWEEN THREE STOPPED POSITIONS TWO OF WHICH COINCIDE WITH SAID SPACED LOCATIONS, RESPECTIVELY. AFTER THE BREAKER PLIES ARE BUILT UP ON SAID BUILDING DRUM AT SAID PAIR OF SPACED LOCATIONS AND TREAD APPLICATOR MECHANISM, ALSO LOCATED AT THE SECOND LOCATION, APPLIES A STRIP OF TREAD MATERIAL AROUND THE BREAKER PLY ASSEMBLY. IN THE THIRD POSITION OF THE BUILDING DRUM A TRANSFER RING COOPERATES THEREWITH FOR TRANSFERRING A COMPLETED BREAKER-TREAD ASSEMBLY FROM THE BUILDING DRUM ONTO A CARCASS SUPPORTED ON A CARCASS SUPPORT MEMBER.
Abstract:
A tire building machine, comprising a radially expansible and contractable, breaker-tread assembly building drum having a magnetized outer surface for retaining building alignment of metallic cord breaker plies during building of the assembly, a pair of variably spaced tire carcass support and shaping discs coaxial with but spaced from the building drum and providing for direct inflation of a first stage carcass supported thereon, a radially expansible and contractable and axially movable transfer ring for transferring breaker-tread assemblies from the drum to carcasses on the shaping discs, and movable, conical, shaping rings engageable with the outer sidewalls of the carcass during expansion of the same for limiting such expansion to a symmetrically centered pattern with respect to the breaker-tread assembly and the beads of the carcass. The foregoing abstract is neither intended to define the invention disclosed in this specification, nor is it intended to be limiting as to the scope of the invention in any way.
Abstract:
A breaker building method and apparatus in which a continuous strip of breaker material, coming from a single source, is severed into strip portions on a main drum. Alternate ones of these strip portions are transferred directly from the main drum to a breaker building drum while the remaining ones of the strip portions are transferred first to an intermediate member and from there to the breaker building drum in such a manner that the cords of successive breaker plies on the breaker building drum form a crossing angle with each other.
Abstract:
A transfer apparatus for transferring an article from a first location, in which the article is in a first position, to a spaced second location, in which the article is in a second position spaced from and angularly shifted with respect to the first position thereof. The transfer apparatus includes a stationary frame supporting a pair of parallel arcuate guides extending between the aforesaid first and second locations, an article support structure extending between and being movable along these guides, and a pair of drive mechanisms simultaneously independently moving spaced portions of the article support structure different distances along the arcuate guides. Each of the drive mechanisms includes a drive crank, a connecting rod pivotally connected to the drive crank, and a mechanism for changing the location along the drive crank of the pivotal connection of the connecting rod.
Abstract:
A tire-building machine, having a feed mechanism for supplying a continuous strip of breaker material, a severing device which severs the strip into strip portions, a transfer mechanism for transporting the severed strip portions to a given location at which there is positioned a breaker building drum and including an arrangement for applying to the building drum at said location the severed strip portions in alternatingly opposed orientation, a tire carcass support and shaping member spaced from the building drum, a transport mechanism for transporting tire tread material toward the breaker building drum positioned at said given location and for there applying the tread material to an annular breaker built up thereon, and a transfer ring for transferring a completed breaker-tread assembly from the building drum onto a carcass supported on the shaping member.
