Directionally Solidified Eutectic Reinforcing FibersEutectic reinforcing fibers for high temperature composites include eutectic mixtures such as Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SiO.sub.2, MgO--Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, CaO--NiO, and CaO--MgO. The fibers may be made by several solidification processes. The edge defined film fed growth process (EFG), however, may be especially appropriate. In this process, a seed having a known composition contacts the surface of a eutectic melt in a crucible and forms a molten film. In the present invention, the composition of the seed may be equal to the composition of the eutectic melt. As the seed is pulled upward, the molten film solidifies to form a eutectic fiber. Directional solidification occurs toward the melt.

A carbide reinforced iron based superalloy material is described. The material consists of an austenitic matrix containing about 30 volume percent aligned M.sub.7 C.sub.3 phase fibers. Fiber alignment is produced by directional solidification. A nominal alloy composition (by weight) is 20% Cr, 10% Mn, 5% Al, 3.2% C. balance iron. The alloys are characterized by the absence of strategic elements, are east to process and have superior mechanical properties to the known prior art, low nickel, iron base superalloys.

This invention concerns a method for controlling the microstructure of directionally solidified eutectic articles and the article produced thereby. The method is particularly appropriate for the production of articles such as turbine blades which require different mechanical properties in different areas of the article. The microstructure is controlled by varying the directional solidification conditions during the casting process.
