Abstract: An electronic device can include a housing defining an aperture and at least partially defining an internal volume of the electronic device, an electromagnetic radiation emitter and an electromagnetic radiation detector disposed in the internal volume, and an optical component disposed in the aperture. The optical component can include a first and second transparent portions disposed above the electromagnetic radiation detector and the electromagnetic radiation emitter, and an opaque portion disposed between the first and second transparent portions and extending a thickness of the optical component. The first transparent portion, the second transparent portion, and the opaque portion can define a flush exterior surface of the electronic device.

Abstract: A head-mounted device may have catadioptric lenses that each include a partial mirror, a quarter wave plate, and a polarizer. An optical system in the head-mounted device may have an infrared light-emitting device and an infrared light-sensing device. The optical system may illuminate a user's eyes in eye boxes and may gather measurements from the illuminated eye boxes for eye tracking and other functions. The optical system may operate through the catadioptric lenses. To enhance optical system performance, the polarizers may be wire grid polarizers that are formed from conductive lines that exhibit enhanced infrared transmission and/or the quarter wave plates may be formed from cholesteric liquid crystal layers that serve as quarter wave plates at visible wavelengths and that do not serve as quarter wave plates at infrared wavelengths.

Abstract: Keycaps for keyboards that have transparent top portions have a set of layered components to define a top surface that provides key definition by curvature, texture, ridges, or other external structural features. Other portions of the keycaps define a glyph or support structure for the top layer. Features such as angle filters and partially reflective materials are implemented to improve the visibility, contrast, and reflectivity of the keycaps. Multiple methods are used to bend or otherwise modify rigid transparent materials such as glass in order to add surface features and to improve aesthetics of the keycaps of a keyboard.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display. The display may have a display cover layer. The display may have an active area with pixels and an inactive area without pixels. An opaque masking layer such as a layer of black ink may be formed on the underside of the display cover layer in the inactive area. Windows may be formed from openings in the opaque masking layer. Optical components such as infrared-light-based optical components may be aligned with the windows. The windows may include coatings in the openings that block visible light while transmitting infrared light. The window coatings may be formed from polymer layers containing pigments, polymer layers containing dyes that are coated with antireflection layers, thin-film interference filters formed from stacks of thin-film layers, or other coating structures.

Abstract: A graded index antireflection layer may be formed on a transparent crystalline member such as a sapphire member. The graded index layer may include aluminum oxide and silicon oxide. The graded index layer may extend from a first surface at the transparent member to a second surface. The fraction of aluminum oxide in the graded index layer may be at a maximum at the first surface so that the index of refraction of the graded index layer at the first surface matches the index of refraction of the transparent member and may be at a minimum at the second surface so the index of refraction of the graded index layer is minimized at the second surface. The graded index layer may be annealed to form aluminum oxide nanocrystals in the graded index layer and to form a polycrystalline aluminum oxide adhesion layer at the first surface.
